Before taking your cat to a crowded pet event, confirm that cats are allowed and that your cat can stay in a secure, genuinely quiet retreat. If there is no such place—or your cat remains distressed—don’t bring them, or leave the event. For a cat who is comfortable with travel and unfamiliar surroundings, a secure carrier, advance preparation, and a plan to prevent unwanted approaches can reduce avoidable risks.
Decide whether the event is suitable for your cat
A busy event can combine loud conversation, foot traffic, unfamiliar smells, nearby animals, and doors opening frequently. FelineVMA identifies these as potential sources of distress or escape risk in its advice about gatherings at home; applying that advice to a public event is an analogy, not a venue-specific study. A crowded setting may not suit every cat.
Assess the actual event and your individual cat rather than relying on a universal checklist or score. Consider whether the organizer permits cats, whether a quiet and secure retreat is available, how your cat handles carriers and travel, and whether you can keep people and other animals from crowding them. If those conditions cannot be met, leaving your cat at home is the safer choice.
Check the event rules and retreat arrangements
Ask the organizer about current pet rules before you travel. Confirm where cats may go, whether other animals will be present, and whether there is a quiet, enclosed space away from crowds and frequent door traffic. Do not assume that an event described as pet-friendly allows cats everywhere or provides a suitable place for them to rest.

Rules vary. For example, FelineVMA’s conference policy prioritizes feline welfare and says animals must not approach or be near cats at exhibit booths or workshops; non-exhibit animals encountering cats in those areas should be promptly removed from that location and proximity. That is a policy for that conference, not a rule that applies to every event. Check the selected organizer’s current policy.
Prepare a secure carrier and travel plan
Choose secure containment
Use a carrier with secure closures. FelineVMA’s caregiver handout describes a hard plastic carrier as the safest and easiest to clean compared with other carrier types, and recommends one carrier per cat. Carry the carrier from underneath rather than relying on its handle alone. A harness, collar, and leash are not safe substitutes for a carrier during travel.

Make the carrier familiar before the event
Leave the carrier accessible well before the trip and let your cat get used to it. Familiar bedding can make it a more recognizable resting place. A cover may reduce unfamiliar sights and sounds or give a cat a hiding option, but use one only if it helps your cat and does not block ventilation. FelineVMA’s 2025 motor-vehicle transport statement also recommends carrier acclimation and an opportunity to hide, such as covering the carrier.
FelineVMA’s caregiver material mentions synthetic feline facial pheromone analog spray as an optional carrier-preparation aid. It does not establish that such products keep cats calm at crowded public events.

Plan the journey as carefully as the venue
Secure the carrier during travel and keep your cat inside it while moving through public areas. Do not open the carrier in a crowd or use a leash as a way to let your cat explore. If travel itself causes persistent distress, ask your veterinarian for advice before the event; medication may help some cats, but any medicine or dose must be determined by the veterinarian.
Give your cat space during the event
Keep the carrier in the quiet retreat you arranged, away from foot traffic, loud activity, and other animals. Let your cat choose whether to stay hidden. Avoid taking them out for introductions, handling them for photographs, or allowing visitors to reach into the carrier. If the quiet area becomes busy, the carrier cannot be kept secure, or your cat cannot settle, move to a safer place or leave. A retreat is only useful if it remains quiet and protected for the time your cat needs it.
