Reward calm behavior, and use physical separation whenever you cannot actively supervise both your dog and baby. As the ASPCA notes, “It can be really hard to care for an infant if your dog insists on being underfoot.”
Choose where your dog will be before you begin
If your dog already responds reliably to a bed or mat cue, send it there before laying the baby down. If it tends to follow, crowd your feet, or ignore the cue, use a baby gate or another secure separate area instead. UC Davis recommends placing the dog behind a baby gate with a treat or favorite toy when you need to focus on the baby.
A barrier is a management tool, not a substitute for supervision. Never leave an infant alone with a dog; when your attention is occupied by the change, keeping them physically apart is the practical option.
Teach a move-away cue
Practice when you are not in the middle of a change. The ASPCA’s “Out from Underfoot” exercise teaches the dog that a cue such as “Go away” or “Shoo” means to move away and earn a reward.

- In a quiet moment, say your chosen cue and show a treat.
- Toss the treat a few feet away so the dog moves away from you. Repeat the cue-and-treat pairing.
- Once the dog understands the pattern, say the cue and wait briefly for it to begin moving before tossing the treat.
- Add a consistent pointing gesture if useful. Mark the movement with “Yes!” and then reward.
Keep practice brief and reward the movement you want. Use the cue during a diaper change only when you can safely direct the dog; if it does not respond, switch to a barrier rather than trying to manage both at once.
Teach a bed or mat cue for a calmer routine
A defined resting spot can give your dog something specific to do while you care for the baby. Put a comfortable bed, mat, or towel away from the changing surface and reward the dog for going there and remaining calm.

To rehearse, lay a towel out as if you were preparing for a diaper change. Cue the dog to stay on its spot and reward it for not approaching. A baby doll can make the practice setup more realistic. UC Davis recommends practicing this scenario before relying on it during an actual change.
Make the spot a positive place with treats, a favorite toy, or a food-dispensing activity. If the dog leaves the spot or cannot settle, calmly create separation with a gate or another secure area; do not rely on repeated corrections while handling the baby.

Keep the routine safe and positive
- Do not yell at, startle, or punish the dog around the baby. UC Davis cautions that punishment may create negative associations.
- Use a gate, crate, or separate room as appropriate when you cannot give the dog and baby your direct attention. A bed cue is useful only while you can supervise.
- Put dirty diapers and diaper-rash ointment where the dog cannot reach them.
- Do not assume a particular gate design or height is suitable for every home; the sources do not specify a universally appropriate model or fit.
When to get professional help
If the dog shows anxiety or aggression, or engages in concerning behavior such as obsessive searching, staring, chasing, or snapping, separate the dog and baby and contact a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist. These situations call for individualized guidance; routine treat practice is not a substitute for addressing a safety concern.
