Treat the dock and the boat as separate hazards: a dog can slip while waiting or boarding, then face unstable footing, fatigue, heat, or a fall overboard once underway. Bring fresh drinking water, take breaks, and keep your dog out of water that may contain a harmful algal bloom.
Before you go: prepare for the dock and the boat
Check marina, rental, and local rules before arriving. Requirements can vary, and there is no universal leash or barrier standard established here. The American Kennel Club advises checking local and state water regulations concerning pets on boats. AKC: All Paws on Deck – Canine Boating Tips
- Fit and inspect a dog-specific personal flotation device (PFD), and practice having your dog wear it before the outing.
- Bring fresh drinking water and a bowl, plus a way to provide shade and rest.
- Decide who will keep watch and how you would retrieve your dog if they went overboard.
- Consider packing a pet first-aid kit; no particular kit is endorsed here.
- Check local water advisories before visiting.
Choose and fit a dog life jacket
A life jacket is recommended even for a dog that swims well. Swimming ability does not prevent a fall, fatigue, or difficulty staying afloat. The AKC advises choosing a jacket that fits snugly and securely without restricting movement, and checking it for wear or damage before use. AKC: What Every Dog Owner Should Know About Water Safety
When checking a jacket, look for secure, adjustable fit, freedom of movement, visibility, and a condition free of damage. A handle may also be useful if you need to lift your dog from the water. These are practical features to assess, not a ranking of specific products: the available guidance does not test or compare models.

Let your dog wear the jacket on land before the trip. A flotation vest adds protection, but it does not replace supervision or a retrieval plan. AKC: Water Safety Tips for Boating and Kayaking With Dogs
Help your dog get comfortable with the boat
Introduce the boat gradually, starting while it is stable on land or safely docked. Reward your dog for voluntarily investigating and boarding. Once they seem comfortable, work up to calm, short trips. If your dog shows distress, pause or return to an earlier step rather than forcing them to continue. The AKC recommends acclimating dogs to boats and water at their own pace. AKC boating and kayaking guidance

At the dock: control movement and boarding
Stay close enough to prevent your dog from wandering toward an edge or slipping while waiting or boarding. Keep them under control in line with the facility’s rules, and make sure the boarding route is manageable for them. A dog that is uneasy with the dock or the boat should not be rushed aboard.
On the water: supervise and plan for a fall
Keep your dog in view and close enough to help. Before departure, agree on who is watching and how you would retrieve the dog, particularly if they are large. Do not tether a dog to a boat, kayak, or raft while underway: if the vessel capsizes, the tether could trap and injure them. A life jacket is not a substitute for having a retrieval plan. Prevent dehydration, fatigue, and heat stress
Offer fresh drinking water; do not rely on lake, river, or ocean water for hydration. Provide shade and rest, and watch for signs that your dog is tired or distressed. Swimming is strenuous, and repeated fetch or biting at water can lead some dogs to swallow too much. The EPA advises protecting pets from exposure to harmful algal blooms and toxins. Do not let your dog drink or swim in water with unusual color, surface scum, foam, mats, or paint-like discoloration, or an unpleasant odor. Check local advisories and err on the side of caution. A bloom’s appearance cannot confirm whether it is toxic, but the CDC identifies signs such as foam, scum, mats, or discoloration as reasons to be alert.
