How to Keep Your Horse Healthy Year-Round

Year-round horse health depends on consistent observation and a preventive-care plan tailored with a veterinarian to the horse, its location, and its exposure.

Keeping a horse healthy year-round means following a steady care routine and adjusting it to the individual horse—not relying on one calendar that fits every animal. Track what is normal for your horse, provide suitable feed and clean water, keep veterinary and dental care current, and plan vaccination, parasite control, and emergency readiness with a veterinarian who knows your horse and region.

What should you monitor every day?

Knowing your horse’s normal habits makes changes easier to spot. Pay attention to appetite, water intake, manure, behavior, body condition, movement, and feet. A change in one of these does not identify a cause by itself, but it is useful information to share with your veterinarian—especially if it is marked, persists, or occurs alongside other changes.

  • Appetite and water: Notice whether your horse is eating and drinking as usual.
  • Manure: Watch for changes from the horse’s usual pattern or appearance.
  • Behavior and movement: Be alert to unusual quietness, agitation, reluctance to move, or a change in the way the horse moves.
  • Body condition and feet: Keep an eye on overall condition and the horse’s feet as part of ordinary handling and care.

Provide feed appropriate to the individual horse and keep drinking water clean. If you are concerned about a change, contact your veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose the cause from observation alone.

How should care change with the seasons?

Seasonal planning is a prompt to review changing conditions, not a universal schedule. Local disease exposure, weather, pasture, travel, and parasite transmission vary, so use these check-ins to discuss adjustments with your veterinarian.

Season What to review
Spring Discuss vaccination timing before seasonal insect-borne or other local risks rise. Review body condition, feed or pasture changes, and the parasite plan.
Summer Maintain clean water and sensible heat management. Pay attention to changes in appetite, behavior, movement, or hydration. Local disease challenge can affect vaccine timing; AAEP’s Potomac horse fever guidance, for example, relates timing to anticipated local seasonal challenge.
Autumn Reassess the plan as weather, pasture, travel, and parasite transmission conditions change. AAEP discusses fall baseline treatment for bots within its parasite guidance, but that is not a universal deworming date.
Winter Keep feed, water, shelter, and movement suitable for the horse and local conditions. Continue routine observation and keep emergency arrangements ready.

There is no single nationwide disease calendar or universal winter protocol established by the guidance cited here. Ask your veterinarian which seasonal risks and timing matter where your horse lives and travels.

What preventive care does your horse need?

Preventive care is individualized. Age, location, health history, use, travel, and contact with other horses can all change a horse’s risk. Work with a licensed veterinarian to set and review a plan; do not infer a complete schedule from a general article.

Vaccination: core protection and risk-based choices

For horses in the United States, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) identifies tetanus, eastern and western equine encephalomyelitis, West Nile virus, and rabies as core vaccines. Other vaccines are selected according to individual and regional risk. AAEP’s adult vaccination chart was updated in January 2026; product choice and timing should be confirmed with the horse’s veterinarian and the product label.

In making vaccine decisions, a veterinarian considers infection risk, the consequences of disease, likely product effectiveness, the possibility of adverse reactions, and cost. A horse that travels to shows or mixes with unfamiliar horses may have different exposure from one with limited contact, but those facts alone do not determine which vaccines or schedule are appropriate. Vaccination reduces risk; it does not guarantee complete protection or prevent every transmission.

Dental care and older horses

Dental needs vary with age, nutrition, and environment. Problems such as sharp points, uneven wear, or abscesses can interfere with eating. Dental care should be performed by a veterinarian or under veterinary supervision; the information available does not establish one procedure or interval for every horse.

For an older horse—particularly one with known health conditions—ask the veterinarian whether a more thorough spring and fall wellness review is appropriate. AAEP convention proceedings describe possible discussion points including weight and body condition, nutrition, endocrine screening, lameness, and hoof assessment. These are options to consider for the individual, not mandatory tests for every senior horse.

How often should you deworm your horse?

Do not automatically dose every horse at fixed intervals throughout the year or rotate dewormers without a plan. AAEP’s May 2024 internal parasite recommendations use fecal testing and targeted treatment rather than blanket fixed-interval dosing. In AAEP’s 2024 announcement of the revised guidelines, Martin Nielsen, DVM, PhD, DVSc, DAVCM, DEVPC, said: “We have seen dramatic development in the field of equine parasite control over the past 10 years, since we first launched these guidelines, and we work hard to keep our recommendations up to date.”

  1. Use fecal egg counts to guide the plan. AAEP recommends testing once or twice yearly to classify horses as low, medium, or high egg shedders.
  2. Check whether treatment is working. AAEP recommends annual fecal egg count reduction testing to assess drug effectiveness.
  3. Set treatment with your veterinarian. The 2024 guidance includes baseline treatment for horses and targeted additional treatment for selected higher shedders. The details depend on the horse and local conditions.

A fecal egg count does not diagnose disease caused by parasites. Age, herd, region, and season matter, so review results and treatment choices with your veterinarian rather than treating a test result as a stand-alone diagnosis.

How can you reduce disease exposure around other horses?

Vaccination is only one part of infection prevention. Horse movement, commingling, crowding, stress, nutrition, sanitation, water, and other management conditions can affect disease risk. Facilities can reduce avoidable exposure with sensible entry requirements and attention to how horses move and mix.

Keep vaccination and health records with the horse, especially when traveling or entering a new facility. Ask the facility or event what records and entry requirements it needs, and discuss unfamiliar or increased exposure with your veterinarian.

What should be ready for an emergency?

Emergency preparation belongs in routine care. AAEP recommends keeping a first-aid kit clean, dry, and accessible. Ask your veterinarian what supplies and instructions are appropriate for your horse and setting; a general kit is not a substitute for veterinary guidance.

  • Store the kit where caregivers can find it quickly, and keep it clean and dry.
  • Keep your regular veterinarian’s and emergency veterinary service’s contact details accessible to everyone responsible for the horse.
  • Ask your veterinarian in advance what signs warrant an urgent call and what information to have ready when you call.
