First decide whether the kitten should be moved: a mother cat may be nearby, so a kitten outdoors is not automatically abandoned. Assess its condition and seek local animal-welfare or veterinary guidance when needed. If bringing it inside is appropriate, prepare one quiet, secure room before the kitten arrives; do not give it immediate access to the whole home.
Should you bring the kitten inside now?
Pause to observe before intervening. The ASPCA guidance for kittens found outside notes that a mother may have left to find food or may be hiding nearby. If the kittens seem cared for, monitor them and ask a local rescue for advice rather than assuming removal is best.
If a kitten appears ill or injured, contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic promptly. Call first to confirm the organization is open and able to accept the kitten. Follow local rules for reporting found animals. If you bring the kitten home, arrange to have it checked for identification and ask a veterinary clinic, shelter, or rescue to scan for a microchip.
Prepare one secure first room
Choose a small, quiet room that can be closed off from the rest of the home. Before the kitten enters, check that doors and windows latch securely, remove hazards, and block gaps where it could crawl, hide, or become stuck. A controlled room gives you a chance to supervise exploration without exposing the kitten to every room and hazard at once.

Set up a resting place, food, fresh water, a scratching pad or post, and suitable toys. Keep the litter area apart from food and water, and use a low-sided litter box if needed. Keep children and resident pets out of this space while the kitten settles.
Room or exercise pen?
A dedicated room is the standard starting point in VCA’s arrival guidance. If you cannot secure a room, an exercise pen can provide more space than a carrier or crate, but VCA notes that a ceiling panel is needed to reduce escape risk. Choose the setup you can secure, equip with essentials, and supervise.

Kitten-proof the rooms the kitten can reach
Before allowing exploration, work through this checklist in the first room and repeat it for each additional room as access expands. These are practical precautions, not a guarantee of a risk-free home; kittens are small, curious, and need supervision.
- Doors and windows: Make sure they close and latch securely so the kitten cannot push its way outdoors.
- Small and entangling items: Put away string, yarn, thread, rubber bands, sharp objects, and anything small enough to swallow.
- Cords: Unplug or tuck away loose electrical cords. Keep blind cords out of reach to prevent chewing or entanglement.
- Medications and chemicals: Secure medications, cleaners, pesticides and insecticides, rodenticides, fertilizers, weed killers, and antifreeze where the kitten cannot reach them.
- Food and plants: Keep chocolate, alliums, and caffeine inaccessible. VCA also identifies lilies, some essential oils, and liquid potpourri products as hazards; keep them away from the kitten.
- Trash and stored food: Use a latching trash can or place trash out of reach. Secure stored food so the kitten cannot get into it or become trapped.
- Appliances and hiding gaps: Keep washer and dryer doors closed, and check inside before using either appliance. Block openings in walls, floors, and ceilings that could trap a kitten.
- Breakables and furniture: Move breakable items away from counter and shelf edges. Provide scratching pads or posts, and put fragile or dangerous objects out of reach.

Bring the kitten home and let it settle
- Transport in a secure cat carrier. Use a carrier for the ride home rather than carrying the kitten loose. A familiar towel can provide a recognizable scent.
- Set the carrier in the prepared room. Keep the room quiet and let the kitten come out at its own pace; do not force it to explore.
- Keep essentials nearby and distinct. Make food, fresh water, litter, and a resting place available, positioning the litter apart from food and water where possible.
- Expand access gradually. Give the kitten time to become familiar with its first room, then introduce other rooms one at a time under supervision. VCA recommends allowing time in the first room before a tour of the home.
Protect resident pets and prepare for emergencies
Keep the newcomer in its own safe space initially. Introduce resident animals gradually rather than allowing immediate contact, and provide separate feeding and sleeping locations at first. Continue to supervise as the animals get used to one another.
Before the kitten explores, save contact information for a veterinarian, a nearby emergency veterinary hospital, and an animal poison service. Verify the local phone numbers and availability for your area; the services and contact details are not the same everywhere.
