For a large, open spider web on a fence, use polyester beef netting: open it along its folded seam, cut irregular holes through the folded fabric, then stretch it tightly across the space. HGTV’s tutorial lists 5 pounds of netting for its example project, along with scissors and a measuring tape; that quantity is not a universal size guide.
Materials and tools
- Polyester beef netting
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Optional: clip-on spiders or fishing line for tying spiders onto the web
Check the netting roll’s dimensions against your measured display area. HGTV’s project uses 5 pounds, but the tutorial does not specify a roll size for every installation.

Make the netting web
- Measure the fence span. Measure the length of the space you plan to cover. HGTV recommends cutting the netting about 1 foot shorter than that span so it can be stretched tight.
- Open the folded netting. Lay it flat and find the fold or seam along one side. Cut down the seam to open the netting; HGTV reports that this makes the material 24 inches wide.
- Fold and cut openings. Keep the netting folded lengthwise several times. Cut small holes through the folded layers at irregular intervals. When you unfold and spread the fabric, the cuts become web-like openings.
- Stretch it across the fence. Cut openings at the points where the web will attach, then stretch the netting from end to end. The tutorial advises pulling the sides tighter for a more realistic appearance. Once it is in place, add more holes if needed; its instructions favor more openings over too few.
- Optional: add runs. Scrape the scissors across the netting surface to create runs in the fabric, as described in the HGTV tutorial.
- Add spiders. Attach clip-on spiders or tie them to the netting with fishing line.
Plan for the surface and weather
The documented installation is on a fence. The tutorial does not give a universal attachment method for brick, siding, trees, or a freestanding frame, so choose a method appropriate to the actual surface rather than assuming fence openings or fasteners will work elsewhere.

Polyester is the named material, but HGTV does not specify a weather rating, wind or rain limits, UV performance, or reuse lifespan. The tutorial therefore does not establish that this decoration is weatherproof or suitable for multi-season outdoor use.
