Before giving your dog anything, call a veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinary professional or poison-control expert specifically tells you to do so for that dog and ingestion.
In the U.S., you can call ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. ASPCA Poison Control is listed as available 24/7, and a consultation fee may apply. Phone numbers and availability can change, so confirm details on the providers’ official websites when possible.

The safest answer to “How do I make my dog throw up?” is: do not try to do it on your own. Induced vomiting can remove some material from a dog’s stomach, but it can also cause chemical burns, aspiration pneumonia, esophageal injury, choking, or a dangerous delay in treatment. Whether emesis is appropriate depends on what the dog swallowed, how much, when it happened, the product’s formulation, and the dog’s current health.

If your dog is unconscious, struggling to breathe, collapsing, seizing, choking, severely lethargic, or otherwise acutely ill, go directly to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital. Call ahead if you can, but do not delay transport while trying a home remedy. The ASPCA’s emergency-care guidance treats poisoning, choking, and other life-threatening conditions as emergencies.

What to do immediately after a suspected ingestion
- Move your dog away from the substance. Prevent further access, but do not put yourself at risk handling a chemical, medication, plant, or contaminated object.
- Call for professional instructions before giving anything. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or animal poison control. Call even if your dog currently looks normal.
- Keep the evidence. Bring or photograph the packaging, product label, medication bottle, remaining material, or plant sample if it is safe to do so. If your dog vomits naturally, ask the professional whether a safely collected sample would be useful.
- Gather the key facts. Have your dog’s weight, age, breed, medical conditions, medications, current symptoms, the substance and estimated amount, and the approximate time of exposure ready.
- Follow the exact plan. The professional may recommend immediate transport, observation, induced vomiting, activated charcoal, another decontamination procedure, or supportive treatment. Do not substitute a different product or repeat a step without approval.
Poison-control experts assess factors such as the animal’s age and health, what was consumed, and how much was eaten before recommending next steps. That individualized assessment is why a generic internet recipe is unsafe.
Why making a dog vomit is not automatically safe
Induced vomiting, or emesis, is a controlled decontamination measure intended to remove some material from the stomach before more of it is absorbed. It is not a general antidote and it does not guarantee that all of the substance will come back up.
Emesis is often most useful relatively soon after ingestion, but there is no universal “safe time window.” Some substances move through the stomach differently, some formulations delay absorption, and some toxins can cause serious injury before vomiting would help. A dog that has already vomited may still have dangerous material in its stomach or may already have absorbed part of the dose.

A corrosive product can burn tissue a second time during regurgitation. A petroleum product can enter the lungs when the dog vomits. A sharp or large object can tear or lodge in the esophagus. A sedated, neurologically affected, or airway-compromised dog may inhale vomit instead of protecting its airway.
When a veterinarian may consider inducing vomiting
A veterinary toxicologist may consider emesis when a dog is clinically normal, conscious, able to swallow and protect its airway, and has recently swallowed a substance that is appropriate to remove from the stomach. Even in those circumstances, the decision remains case-specific.

Recent chocolate ingestion is one example in which a veterinarian may consider emesis for a clinically normal dog. The risk still depends on the dog’s weight, the type and amount of chocolate, the product’s formulation, the time since ingestion, and the dog’s condition. See the Merck Veterinary Manual’s chocolate-toxicosis guidance for the factors professionals evaluate.
At a veterinary clinic, prescription emetics such as apomorphine or ropinirole may be used for dogs. These allow the veterinary team to consider the dog’s airway, response, and complications. A clinic can also provide immediate treatment if vomiting is ineffective or unsafe.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat about 3% hydrogen peroxide?
3% hydrogen peroxide is not a harmless household remedy. It can irritate or ulcerate the mouth, esophagus, and stomach, and its foam can be aspirated into the lungs, causing severe aspiration pneumonia. Products stronger than 3%, including some hair-dye peroxide products, are especially dangerous.
The Merck Veterinary Manual describes 3% hydrogen peroxide as a gastric irritant that may be considered in dogs only when veterinary care or prescription options are unavailable. That is professional clinical guidance—not permission to use it as a routine home treatment.
If a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically directs you to use a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, use only the exact product, amount, timing, and repeat instructions provided for your dog. Do not estimate a dose from your dog’s size, use a stronger concentration, or repeat it because vomiting has not occurred immediately. Weight-based clinical references are not safe to convert into a universal DIY recipe.
Never induce vomiting in these situations
Do not give an emetic until a professional has evaluated the ingestion if any of the following applies:

| Situation | Why vomiting can make it worse |
|---|---|
| Corrosive or caustic material, such as some drain cleaners, strong cleaning products, or certain batteries | Regurgitation can expose the mouth, throat, and esophagus to the corrosive material again, causing a second burn. |
| Gasoline, kerosene, diesel, or another hydrocarbon or petroleum distillate | Vomiting increases the chance that the liquid will enter the lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia. |
| A sharp, large, or potentially obstructive object | The object may tear tissue or become lodged in the esophagus while coming back up. |
| The dog is already vomiting | More vomiting may increase dehydration, irritation, and aspiration risk without providing useful decontamination. |
| The dog is symptomatic or neurologically unstable, including severe weakness, tremors, abnormal behavior, or severe lethargy | The dog may not protect its airway or may deteriorate during the attempt. |
| The dog is unconscious, seizing, choking, unable to swallow, or unable to protect its airway | Vomited material can be inhaled, and the immediate priority is airway and emergency stabilization. |
| A brachycephalic dog or a dog with airway or swallowing problems | Pugs, French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, and dogs with conditions such as megaesophagus may have a higher aspiration risk. |
| A history of seizures or another condition affecting neurologic or airway function | The risk of aspiration or clinical deterioration may outweigh any possible benefit. |
These are not the only reasons emesis may be inappropriate. The Pet Poison Helpline’s veterinary guidance on inducing vomiting explains why airway protection, existing vomiting, corrosives, hydrocarbons, brachycephalic anatomy, and a dog’s clinical signs matter.
Dangerous methods to avoid
Do not try to force vomiting with any of the following:
- Table salt: It can cause salt toxicosis and potentially fatal cerebral edema.
- Powdered mustard: It may be inhaled and damage the lungs.
- Syrup of ipecac: It is not recommended for inducing vomiting in dogs.
- Cooking oil or other oils: Oil does not make decontamination safe and can increase aspiration risk.
- Milk: It is not a reliable way to neutralize or remove a poison and may interfere with professional instructions.
- Fingers or objects in the throat: This is ineffective, can injure the dog, and can result in a bite.
- Stronger peroxide or hair-dye peroxide: Concentration matters; stronger products can cause more serious injury.
Do not give activated charcoal, food, medication, or any other home treatment unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional directs you to. Hydrogen peroxide itself can cause gastrointestinal injury, and inhaled peroxide foam can produce severe respiratory complications.
If your dog vomits naturally
Natural vomiting is different from deliberately administering an emetic, but it does not prove that the danger has passed. Some of the substance may already have been absorbed, and material may remain in the stomach or intestines.
Do not try to make the dog vomit again. Call your veterinarian or poison control, describe what came up, and follow instructions about whether to collect a sample. Keep the product packaging and, if safe, take a photograph of the vomit or the material your dog may have swallowed. Seek emergency care immediately if vomiting is repeated or accompanied by breathing trouble, weakness, tremors, seizures, collapse, blood, severe abdominal pain, or unusual behavior.

What may happen at the veterinary hospital
A veterinarian may decide that induced vomiting is appropriate, unnecessary, or unsafe. The decision can change as the dog’s symptoms, airway status, and exposure details become clearer.
Possible treatment includes:
- carefully supervised emesis using a veterinary medication such as apomorphine or ropinirole;
- observation and repeated examinations when the exposure is low-risk or vomiting would add danger;
- activated charcoal in selected cases;
- gastric lavage or endoscopy when appropriate and performed under controlled conditions;
- a specific antidote when one exists;
- intravenous fluids, anti-nausea treatment, seizure control, pain management, respiratory support, or other supportive care.
Activated charcoal is not appropriate for every poisoning. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s general poisoning-treatment guidance lists important contraindications, including caustic or hydrocarbon ingestion, aspiration risk, suspected obstruction, severe dehydration, shock, ileus, and prolonged vomiting. Do not give charcoal at home unless a professional has specifically recommended it and explained how it should be administered.

If you keep emergency supplies, a pet first-aid kit can help with general preparedness, but it is not a poisoning-treatment kit and does not replace veterinary advice. A oral dosing syringe for pets may be useful for administering a liquid only when a veterinarian has directed you to give that liquid. Never use either item to improvise treatment.
Preventing poisoning at home
After the emergency is over, reduce the chance of another exposure:
- Store human and veterinary medications in closed cabinets, not on counters or bedside tables.
- Keep chocolate, xylitol-containing foods, grapes and raisins, onions, and other hazardous foods away from dogs.
- Secure cleaners, detergents, disinfectants, pesticides, fertilizers, and rodenticides in their original labeled containers.
- Keep batteries, vaping products, automotive fluids, gasoline, kerosene, and other petroleum products inaccessible.
- Do not leave pills, dropped food, open trash, or chewed packaging where a dog can reach them.
- Learn which plants are toxic and keep unknown plants, bulbs, and plant trimmings away from pets.
- Save the phone numbers for your veterinarian, nearest emergency hospital, and poison-control service in your phone before an emergency occurs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I give my dog hydrogen peroxide if it ate something toxic?
Not unless a veterinarian or animal poison-control professional specifically directs you to use the exact 3% product and gives dog-specific instructions. Hydrogen peroxide can injure the stomach and esophagus, and its foam can be aspirated into the lungs.

What should I do if my dog is already vomiting?
Do not induce more vomiting. Call a veterinarian or poison-control service, explain what the dog swallowed and what the vomit looked like, and follow instructions. Go to an emergency hospital immediately for breathing trouble, weakness, seizures, collapse, or other severe symptoms.

No. These methods are unreliable or dangerous. Salt can cause salt toxicosis, mustard can damage the lungs if inhaled, oil can increase aspiration risk, milk does not safely neutralize poison, and syrup of ipecac is not recommended.
If my dog swallowed chocolate, should I make it vomit?
Call a veterinarian or poison control first. Emesis may be considered for a clinically normal dog after a recent chocolate ingestion, but the decision depends on the dog’s size, the chocolate’s type and amount, the timing, and the dog’s health.
The Bottom Line
Do not make your dog vomit until a veterinarian or animal poison-control professional tells you to. Call immediately with the product, estimated amount, time of exposure, your dog’s weight, and current symptoms. If your dog is unconscious, choking, seizing, collapsing, struggling to breathe, or severely ill, go straight to an emergency veterinary hospital.
