For a dog that needs to use household stairs, the first improvement is secure traction: fit carpet or non-slip stair treads, and place a non-slip mat at the landing. Use a stair gate to block unsupervised access when your dog may be unsteady or at risk of falling. Whether stairs are appropriate at all depends on your individual dog, so ask your veterinarian if you notice pain, hesitation, weakness, or balance problems.
Check the dog and the staircase first
Look at the whole route, not just the steps. Slick flooring at the top or bottom can undermine better grip on the stairs. Also consider whether the stairs are narrow, steep, or circular, and whether your dog seems hesitant, loses balance, or appears painful while moving. Canine Arthritis Resources and Education (CARE) identifies slick, narrow, steep, and circular stairs as potential concerns; VCA Animal Hospitals advises tailoring home changes to a dog’s mobility and osteoarthritis.
If your dog has pain, arthritis, weakness, or balance difficulties—or you are unsure whether stair use is suitable—ask your veterinarian for an individual plan. Age alone does not determine whether a dog can use stairs safely.
Add secure grip to the steps and landing
When your dog must use the stairs, carpet or non-slip stair treads can improve footing. CARE recommends traction coverings for dogs with osteoarthritis. Secure any runner or tread so it cannot shift or bunch, and make sure slick sections are not left exposed along the route.

Put a non-slip mat at the bottom landing, where the dog steps off the stairs. Check that its backing keeps it in place; a loose rug can create another slip or trip hazard. VCA also recommends non-slip stairs for dogs with mobility limitations.
Block unsupervised access when needed
A stair gate can prevent a dog from using stairs alone when mobility problems or fall risk make that unsafe. CARE recommends gates at the top and bottom to prevent unsupervised access for dogs with osteoarthritis; VCA likewise notes that a gate can restrict access when a dog with osteoarthritis should not use stairs unsupervised.

Choose gate placement based on the route your dog actually uses, and install it securely so it reliably blocks access. Follow your veterinarian’s advice if they have recommended avoiding stairs.
Consider support or another route
Harness assistance
For some dogs, a support harness with a handle may let a person steady and slow the dog, particularly during descent. CARE and Canine Arthritis Management discuss harness or sling support as an option, but it does not make stairs safe for every dog. Ask a veterinarian how to assist your dog safely and what kind of support is appropriate.

Ramps
A ramp may suit some short, shallow transitions if it is stable, has good traction, and has edges that help prevent a fall. VCA recommends considering traction, stability, safe edges, and gradual acclimation. Canine Arthritis Management discusses ramps for a couple of shallow steps; the available guidance does not establish a general ramp solution for a full household staircase.
