Make hummingbird nectar by dissolving 1/4 cup of refined white sugar in 1 cup of water, then cooling it before filling a clean feeder. Change the nectar every 2–3 days, or daily in particularly hot weather, and do not add honey or red food coloring.

The best hummingbird nectar recipe

Water Refined white sugar
1 cup 1/4 cup
2 cups 1/2 cup
4 cups 1 cup

Use refined white table sugar and water in a 1:4 ratio by volume. The National Audubon Society and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommend this basic recipe. Special commercial nectar mixes are not needed.

How to make hummingbird nectar

  1. Measure the ingredients. Use 1/4 cup of refined white sugar for every 1 cup of water.
  2. Dissolve the sugar. Audubon’s recipe brings the water to a boil, stirs in the sugar until dissolved, and then cools the mixture. Do not treat boiling as the only safe method; the essential steps are dissolving the sugar and cooling the solution before use.
  3. Cool the nectar completely. Do not pour hot nectar into the feeder.
  4. Fill a clean feeder. Add only what you expect to use before the next change.

Does hummingbird nectar need to be boiled?

Audubon’s recipe boils the water to dissolve the sugar, then cools the mixture before filling the feeder. Sources differ in how they present heating, but agree on the 1:4 ratio. Whatever method you use to dissolve the sugar, cool the nectar before putting it in the feeder.

When to change the nectar

Change the nectar every 2–3 days, or daily in particularly hot weather. Replace it sooner if it looks cloudy, and clean the feeder promptly.

How to clean a hummingbird feeder

Take the feeder apart so you can remove mold and residue from its reservoir, ports, seams, and other internal surfaces. A feeder that comes apart easily is simpler to scrub; a bottlebrush can help reach inside, but neither a special brush nor a particular feeder is required.

  1. Discard the old nectar.
  2. Take the feeder apart and scrub its parts, using a bottlebrush if helpful.
  3. For a periodic cleaning, Audubon recommends a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water.
  4. Rinse all parts thoroughly so cleaning solution does not remain in the feeder.
  5. Refill with fresh, cooled nectar.

Clean regularly, and clean immediately if nectar appears cloudy. Do not leave cleaning solution in the feeder beyond two or three days.
