Feed dogs separately, remove their bowls when they finish, and offer valuable chews or food-filled toys only when the dogs are physically apart. A size difference makes secure separation and supervision especially important, but size alone does not tell you which dog will guard or predict the outcome of a confrontation. Let each dog’s behavior guide your plan.
What resource guarding can look like
Resource guarding is behavior used to keep another animal or person away from something a dog values. That can include meals, toys, chews, stolen objects, or other prized items. Signs range from moving away or hovering over an item to freezing, growling, snapping, chasing, or biting. ASPCA’s guide to food guarding describes this range of behavior.
A dog’s size does not establish who will guard, who will be targeted, or how serious an encounter may be. The available veterinary and animal-welfare guidance does not set a size-based guarding rule or injury threshold. Manage the dogs as individuals, and prevent access to situations in which either dog has shown concern over a resource.
Separate dogs around meals
- Set up separate spaces. Feed each dog in a different room, crate, or behind a secure gate or exercise pen. Choose a barrier the dogs cannot jump over, push through, or otherwise bypass.
- Keep them apart while they eat. Do not allow one dog to approach the other’s bowl, even if one dog usually finishes first.
- Remove bowls before reuniting them. Wait until both dogs have finished and pick up the bowls before allowing them to share space. VCA recommends separate feeding and picking up bowls after meals when introducing a second dog in its guidance on getting a second dog.
If a dog has already guarded a bowl, keep the separation routine consistent rather than testing whether the behavior has passed.

Manage toys, chews, and food-filled enrichment
Give high-value chews, toys, and food-filled enrichment only when the dogs are physically separated. Food-filled toys can be especially valuable, and a dog may guard a novel one. VCA recommends using gates, doors, pens, or crates to separate pets where needed and supervising them at first when offering enrichment toys; see its guide to enrichment and activity toys.
- Choose each toy or chew for the individual dog’s size and chewing habits.
- Avoid items small enough to swallow or likely to fragment, and supervise chewing.
- Remove access if either dog shows guarding or distress; do not let them share a valuable item just because it has been safe before.
The ASPCA position statement on dog chews and treats supports size-appropriate choices and supervision. It also notes hazards such as tooth injury from hard items and serious risks from swallowing chews. These precautions are about safe use, not a product-specific recommendation.

Choose a separation setup that works in your home
Separate rooms, crates, gates, and exercise pens can all help prevent access to guarded resources. Choose based on the dogs and your layout: a barrier must be secure and suitable for both dogs, and it must prevent jumping or pushing through. A gate or pen manages access; it does not treat guarding.
Likewise, a slow-feeder dish is not a general fix for dog-to-dog food guarding. ASPCA mentions it only as a possible aid in a specific food-guarding treatment exercise when a dog eats so quickly that there are too few opportunities to deliver better food. Use it for that limited purpose only with appropriate professional guidance.

Respond safely to warning signs
A freeze, tense posture, fixed stare, growl, snap, or chase is a warning to stop and create distance. Do not punish, intimidate, challenge, or reach into a bowl to test a dog’s reaction. Do not forcibly take a guarded item. ASPCA cautions, “Do not punish or intimidate your dog when he guards food.” Punishment or forced removal can increase danger rather than resolve the underlying behavior.
Behavior modification may involve desensitization and counterconditioning, but ASPCA describes these exercises as complex. Do not attempt them on your own if you think a dog may bite or has tried to bite. Stop an exercise if the dog becomes stressed, refuses food, freezes, growls, snaps, or is not progressing, and seek qualified help.

When to contact a behavior professional
Get help promptly if there has been a bite or attempted bite, warnings are escalating, children could be exposed to risk, or your efforts are stressful or stalled. ASPCA identifies a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist, or a Certified Professional Dog Trainer with education and experience treating aggression as possible professionals to consult. Verify credentials and relevant experience, and ask whether the provider can assess the dogs and the home situation.
The AVMA’s dog-bite prevention guidance emphasizes that bite risk is not limited by size: “Any dog can bite: big or small, male or female, young or old.” Use reliable separation and individual behavior—not assumptions about which dog is more likely to cause harm—to guide daily management.
