Manage a Pitsky’s shedding by choosing grooming tools for the coat your dog actually has, brushing gently and more often when loose hair increases, and bathing only when needed. Shedding is normal and cannot be stopped completely; brushing helps collect loose hair before it spreads around your home.
Why Pitsky coats—and shedding—can vary
“Pitsky” commonly refers to a Husky and Pit Bull type mix, but it does not guarantee a particular coat. A Siberian Husky has a dense double coat with longer guard hairs over a fine undercoat, and often sheds heavily during seasonal coat changes. The American Pit Bull Terrier has a short, dense coat and moderate shedding year-round, which may increase in spring and fall. Those parent-breed descriptions are useful clues, not a reliable prediction of an individual Pitsky’s coat or shedding schedule. Choose a brush for your dog’s coat
Look at and feel the coat before choosing a tool. The aim is to remove loose hair comfortably—not to use the strongest brush available.

Build a gentle brushing routine
Brush regularly, then increase how often you do it when you notice more loose hair. As general dog guidance—not a Pitsky-specific study—Texas A&M veterinary technician Harmony Diers recommends brushing at least three to four times a week for 5 to 10 minutes to help soften the coat and reduce shed hair. - Let your dog inspect the brush, then start with a brief session while they are comfortable.
- Use gentle strokes that follow the coat. Work through tangles patiently; do not yank or pull forcefully.
- Check behind the ears and under the legs for tangles or mats. After walks, look for burrs and twigs caught in the coat.
- Pause if brushing causes discomfort, skin redness, or distress. Ask a veterinarian or groomer about persistent difficulty or a coat that mats easily.
Brushing also gives you a chance to notice parasites, lumps, skin sensitivity, or changes in the coat. It can collect loose hair, but no brush, bath, or supplement can eliminate normal shedding. The American Animal Hospital Association’s shedding guidance; ASPCA dog-grooming tips.

Bathe when needed and protect the skin
Use occasional baths for dirt or odor rather than following a rigid, frequent schedule. A dog’s bathing needs depend on coat, activity, age, and health; a bath during seasonal shedding may help a dog with a heavy undercoat. Use shampoo formulated for dogs and rinse thoroughly, since residue can irritate skin. Bathing too often can strip natural oils and leave skin or coat dry. - Brush out loose tangles and burrs before bathing; water can make tangles harder to remove.
- Keep water and shampoo away from your dog’s eyes, ears, and nose.
- Rinse until shampoo residue is gone.
Know when to get veterinary or grooming help
Call a veterinarian about unusual shedding or skin changes
Seek veterinary advice for a sudden or dramatic increase in shedding, bald or thinning patches, red or irritated skin, crusting, or persistent scratching. Shedding can be normal, but hair loss and skin changes may need diagnosis. Do not try to solve an unexplained change by bathing more often or switching brushes alone. Leave extensive mats to a professional
For severe or extensive mats, contact a professional groomer or veterinarian. Do not try to cut mats out with scissors: VCA warns that it is easy to cut the skin.
