Measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while they’re relaxed, then compare that measurement—and how they sleep—with the bed’s usable sleeping area. Check the maker’s chart for the specific bed: there is no universal extra-length allowance, and bolsters can make the sleeping surface smaller than the bed’s outside dimensions.
Measure your dog while they’re relaxed
- Wait for a natural resting position. Measure when your dog is lying down and relaxed. If they usually stretch out, take the measurement while they’re stretched out; note how far their legs extend beyond their body.
- Measure nose to tail base. Measure from the tip of the nose to the point where the tail joins the body. Kuranda’s official sizing guidance uses this measurement. A flexible tape measure can make it easier to follow your dog’s shape.
- Record how your dog sleeps. A dog that sprawls needs room to stretch, while a dog that curls may prefer a more enclosed bed. For a curled sleeper, estimate the diameter of their resting shape as an additional guide.
Allow for your dog’s sleep style and the bed’s shape
Your dog’s nose-to-tail measurement is a starting point, not a complete fit test. Compare it with the usable area inside the bed, taking into account the position your dog usually sleeps in. A flat mattress may offer more uninterrupted space than a bed with raised sides.
Bolsters and raised edges take up space, so the outside footprint can overstate the area available for sleeping. Look for the maker’s interior sleeping dimensions when they’re published. If they aren’t listed, ask the manufacturer how much usable space the bed provides rather than assuming its full outside length is available.
Use the maker’s sizing chart, not a universal allowance
Published sizing advice varies, and the figures below are recommendations from particular sources—not a veterinary or industry-wide standard.

These recommendations differ, so don’t treat one allowance as correct for every bed. Follow the sizing chart for the model you’re considering, then check its usable interior dimensions against your dog’s measurements and sleeping posture. Breed labels and size names such as “large” are not consistent across brands.

Before choosing a bed, measure the spot where it will go and make sure the bed’s outside dimensions fit. For a crate bed, check the crate’s interior dimensions too. Kuranda recommends a crate at least 2 inches larger than the bed in both dimensions to leave room to put the bed inside. That clearance is separate from the sleeping space your dog needs.
