Monitoring a diabetic dog takes more than checking one glucose result. Track clinical signs and body weight over time, and use blood glucose curves, continuous glucose monitoring, or fructosamine testing as needed. A veterinarian must interpret those findings together: different measures can disagree, and a number alone cannot establish whether treatment is working.
What should you track at home?
Keep a consistent record of your dog’s clinical signs and body weight. These observations help the veterinarian judge how your dog is doing in daily life and interpret laboratory or device readings. Follow the monitoring schedule your veterinarian sets; changes to insulin should be guided by that clinician, not by an isolated reading.
Record relevant changes between appointments, such as whether the signs your veterinarian is monitoring have improved or worsened. Bring the log to follow-up visits so it can be considered alongside test results.
Which tests may be used?
The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2026 Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs, published August 31, 2026, describe serial assessment of clinical signs and body weight alongside one or more glycemic assessments. The methods provide different kinds of information; the guideline does not rank them as a single best option for every dog.

| Method | What it measures | How to understand it |
|---|---|---|
| Blood glucose curve (BGC) | Blood glucose measurements collected over a period of time. | An intermittent assessment; interpret it with clinical signs and weight. |
| Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) | Glucose trends collected continuously by a monitor. | Provides a different view from a curve or a single test, but must still be interpreted in context. |
| Fructosamine testing | Glycated proteins, offering a broader-window measure than an individual glucose reading. | It is one part of the assessment, not a stand-alone verdict on control. |
Your veterinarian can select or combine approaches according to your dog’s circumstances. The 2026 dog guideline identifies these options but does not provide a head-to-head ranking or cost comparison.
Why one glucose result cannot settle the question
Glucose assessments and the dog’s clinical picture may not agree. AAHA states that no single glycemic assessment tool it evaluated consistently distinguished well-controlled from poorly controlled diabetes, and advises interpreting glycemic data in relation to whether clinical signs are present.

As reported by the 2026 AAHA guideline, a review of 53 canine diabetes cases found that all glycemic assessments and glycated protein concentrations were consistent with good control in only 60% of dogs classified as clinically well-controlled. The statistic illustrates why a reading should not be treated as a complete verdict; it does not establish a target or threshold for an individual dog. The cited study was Briggs CE, Nelson RW, Feldman EC, et al., “Reliability of history and physical examination findings for assessing control of glycemia in dogs with diabetes mellitus: 53 cases (1995–1998),” Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association 217(1):48–53 (2000).
Is urine glucose useful for routine monitoring?
AAHA does not recommend urinary glucose as a routine monitoring tool for diabetic dogs. It may occasionally be useful, such as when screening for hypoglycemia, but it should not replace the monitoring plan set by your veterinarian.

Choosing a home meter or CGM
If your veterinarian recommends home blood glucose checks, ask which veterinary-calibrated meter and compatible strips to use, how and when to collect readings, and what to do with results that concern you. The dog guideline supports monitoring by blood glucose curves but does not endorse a particular meter, model, or retailer.
Device guidance for cats should not be treated as a dog-specific recommendation. AAHA’s separate 2026 guidance for cats discusses veterinary-calibrated meters and FreeStyle Libre CGM in feline care; that material does not establish that a particular device is suitable for your dog. Ask your veterinarian which method fits your dog and how any unexpected reading should be checked.

What to bring to a veterinary review
- Your serial record of clinical signs and body weight.
- Blood glucose curve, CGM, or fructosamine results collected as directed.
- Notes about when readings were taken and any changes you observed, so the veterinarian can interpret them in context.
- Questions about how to respond to concerning results; do not change insulin based solely on one number unless your veterinarian has given you specific instructions.
