Keep your cat contained while the home is being loaded
On moving day, keep your cat in its closed safe room, away from packing traffic, noise, and exterior doors that may be open. Check that it has water and a clean litter tray. Should my cat stay with a sitter or in a cattery while I move?

Open up the home gradually
Let your cat explore at its own pace rather than carrying it from room to room or giving it unrestricted access immediately. Before opening doors, check for places where it could become trapped and for hazards it might ingest. Secure windows and exterior doors. Maintain familiar routines and offer your usual social interaction.

How long should I keep my cat indoors after moving?
Keep your cat indoors for at least three weeks as a cautious general planning baseline. The published guidance differs: Cats Protection advises at least three weeks indoors, while VCA advises waiting at least two weeks before allowing access to an unfenced outdoor area. These are recommendations, not study-derived guarantees. Consider your cat’s behavior and circumstances before deciding it is ready.
Before outdoor access, make sure your cat is microchipped and the registry has your current address and contact details. Begin with short, supervised daytime outings, leave a route back indoors available, and increase time outside gradually.
