Kearney makes a good stop for Nebraska history, art and Platte River scenery—and in spring, for watching migrating Sandhill Cranes. The Great Platte River Road Archway and Fort Kearny State Historical Park are the year-round history anchors; crane viewing is seasonal, with sunrise and sunset the prime times. You can cover the main attractions in a full day, but two days give you more room for a guided wildlife outing and time on the trails.

Choose your stops by season and interest

Stop Best for Season and cost notes Plan around
Great Platte River Road Archway Self-guided Nebraska and travel history Year-round attraction; historical-exhibit admission is paid. Free campus areas are separate. Monday–Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday noon–5 p.m. The final tour begins at 4:30 p.m., according to the Archway’s visitor plan.
Fort Kearny State Historical Park Frontier history, Platte Valley scenery and trails Open year-round; a Nebraska park permit is required. The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset. Interpretive-center hours vary by season.
Sandhill Crane viewing Seasonal wildlife watching Migration is concentrated in spring. Public viewing areas are available; Rowe Sanctuary offers seasonal guided experiences. Sunrise and sunset are prime river-viewing periods. Guided-tour dates and prices vary by season.
Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) Indoor art and a weather-proof break Free admission. Tuesday–Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday noon–5 p.m. Check the holiday closure list. The museum says its galleries and facilities are wheelchair accessible.
Cottonmill Park and the trail system Walking, cycling and an outdoor break The city lists a 13.1-mile paved hike-bike route connecting Cottonmill Park and Fort Kearny. Allow for the distance and check conditions before setting out.

Visit the Archway for a compact history of overland travel

Spanning I-80 at Exit 275, the Great Platte River Road Archway tells the story of travel through Nebraska, from Oregon Trail pioneers and Pony Express riders to the transcontinental railroad and Lincoln Highway. Its self-guided, family-oriented exhibits make it an easy first stop if you want historical context before visiting Fort Kearny. Admission to the historical exhibits is separate from access to free campus areas.

For the exhibits, allow time to arrive before the final tour begins at 4:30 p.m. The Archway’s posted visitor plan gives hours of 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon–5 p.m. Sunday; check its official visitor information before setting out in case hours change.

Explore Fort Kearny’s history and river landscape

Established in 1848 to protect travelers moving west, Fort Kearny later served people and routes associated with the Pony Express, stage travel and the railroad. The state historical park preserves that history through reconstructed buildings and an interpretive center. Nearby recreation areas and connected hike-bike routes offer a change of pace, with Platte Valley scenery and opportunities to look for wildlife.

The park itself is open from 8 a.m. to sunset year-round, but the interpretive center follows seasonal hours. A Nebraska park permit is required, so check current park information and permit details before your visit.

Watch Sandhill Cranes during spring migration

When and where to go

The National Audubon Society says migration typically begins in early March and continues for four to six weeks, into early or mid-April. The precise timing varies, so treat those dates as a seasonal guide rather than a guarantee. Cranes gather along the Platte River, and sunrise and sunset are the prime viewing periods.

Audubon’s 3,000-acre Rowe Sanctuary is about 20 minutes from Kearney and offers seasonal guided viewing experiences. Public alternatives include the Fort Kearny Hike/Bike Bridge, designated roadside pull-offs and the Plautz Viewing Platform. Use designated viewing areas, do not trespass on private river land, and never stop in the roadway.

Guided viewing or a public site?

A Rowe Sanctuary tour provides a guide and reserved viewing infrastructure; public sites are self-guided alternatives. Visit Kearney listed guided experiences for March 4–April 7, 2026, at $60 plus taxes and fees. Those dates have passed, and that listing should not be read as current pricing or availability for a future season. Check Rowe Sanctuary’s current program details before making plans.

What to bring

  • Binoculars and a camera with the flash turned off.
  • Warm layers, a hat, boots and gloves; viewing blinds are unheated.
  • A warm drink and snacks, particularly for a sunrise outing.

Give yourself time to dress for the conditions and follow the instructions at your chosen viewing location. The local crane-viewing FAQ recommends these supplies and asks visitors to respect private land and road safety.

Make time for art at MONA

The Museum of Nebraska Art is a free indoor stop for visitors interested in regional art or looking for a quieter break between outdoor activities. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.; check its holiday closure list before going. MONA states that its galleries and facilities are wheelchair accessible.

Walk or cycle the Cottonmill-to-Fort Kearny trail

Cottonmill Park is the trailhead for a 13.1-mile paved hike-bike route to Fort Kearny, according to the City of Kearney. It can be a destination in itself or an outdoor interval between museum and wildlife stops. Since the full route is substantial, choose a turnaround point that suits your time and ability, and confirm current trail conditions before heading out.

Add another stop if you have time

For a different kind of indoor visit, look into the American Automobile Experience or Fort Kearny Museum. Downtown Kearney, Crane River Theater, parks, golf, water activities and family entertainment offer more options. Check the city’s attractions directory and each venue’s schedule, especially for events or seasonal activities.

Build a one- or two-day Kearney itinerary

One day outside crane season

  1. Start at the Archway in the morning.
  2. Have lunch, then visit Fort Kearny State Historical Park.
  3. Spend the afternoon at MONA or the American Automobile Experience.
  4. Finish with a walk at Cottonmill Park or time downtown.

One day during crane season

  1. Choose a sunrise public viewing site or a reserved Rowe Sanctuary tour.
  2. Use midday for the Archway and Fort Kearny.
  3. Visit MONA in the afternoon.
  4. If daylight, weather and energy allow, finish at a designated Platte River viewing site around sunset.

Two days

Use one day for the Archway, Fort Kearny and MONA, then give the second morning or evening to Rowe Sanctuary or a public crane-viewing site. Add the Cottonmill-to-Fort Kearny route if you want more time outdoors. Keeping the schedule flexible helps accommodate weather, seasonal hours and tour availability.

Plan for hours, access and pets

Attractions have different operating hours, seasonal schedules and access requirements. Recheck official venue information before departure, particularly for park permits, holiday closures and guided-tour reservations. MONA states that its facilities are wheelchair accessible; the available information does not establish access conditions for every trail, bridge or viewing platform, so confirm with the site if you have specific mobility needs.

If you are bringing a pet, contact each attraction or viewing site directly to confirm its current animal policy and any access restrictions. The information here does not establish which venues allow pets, and wildlife-viewing areas call for particular care around birds, other visitors and private land.
