Let the cat choose whether to approach, begin with a brief touch around the head, chin, or neck, and pause often to see how it responds. Cats vary: some enjoy petting, some accept only certain kinds or durations, and some do not want to be touched. Treat these 15 steps as a flexible guide—not a routine every cat will welcome.
How to pet a cat: 15 steps
- Pause before approaching. Give the cat time to notice you instead of reaching toward it suddenly.
- Leave an open route away. Do not corner or restrain a cat to get a pet.
- Observe before you reach. Look at the cat’s posture and overall response; no single cue can tell you everything.
- Invite, rather than impose, contact. Let the cat decide whether to come closer.
- Offer a relaxed hand to investigate. Hold it nearby and wait instead of moving straight toward the cat’s head.
- Wait for interest. If the cat does not approach or otherwise welcome contact, leave it alone.
- Start with a brief, gentle touch. Keep the first contact light and give the cat a chance to respond.
- Try the head, chin, or neck. These are common favorite areas, not guaranteed preferences for every cat. The Humane Society of the United States lists them as commonly preferred places to pet.
- Avoid delicate facial areas. Do not pet around the eyes, nose, mouth, or ears. Cats Protection advises avoiding these sensitive areas.
- Stroke in the direction of the fur. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Interaction Guidelines say cats are most comfortable when petted or massaged this way. Read the guidelines.
- Keep the interaction calm and short at first. Do not assume that a cat wants a long session.
- Pause after a few strokes. Give the cat room to show whether it welcomes more or has had enough.
- Continue only while the cat remains comfortable or solicits contact. A cat that stays nearby or nudges you may be welcoming more; consider its whole response, not one signal alone. Cats Protection describes signs a cat welcomes more contact.
- Stop if the cat withdraws or shows irritation. Do not wait for a bite or scratch. Repeated petting can become unpleasant, and the ASPCA advises stopping when a cat signals it has had enough. See the ASPCA’s guidance on aggression in cats.
- Let the cat end the interaction. Allow it to leave freely, without following or holding it in place.
Where do cats like to be petted?
The head, chin, and neck are useful places to begin because many cats enjoy being petted there. They are starting points, not a map that applies to every cat. Cats Protection also advises avoiding the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. Let the individual cat’s response guide where you touch and whether you continue.

How can you tell when a cat wants you to stop?
Watch what the cat does as well as where it is being touched. Turning its head to look at your hand is one sign the Humane Society identifies as meaning a cat may have had enough. Moving away or showing irritation are reasons to stop rather than trying another spot. A cat’s signals can be subtle, so do not treat a single behavior—such as purring or lying belly-up—as proof that it wants more petting.

Why brief, cat-led petting matters
Some cats enjoy petting, holding, carrying, or hugging; others tolerate only some of these, and some dislike being petted. Repeated contact can irritate a cat even if it initially accepted a touch. The practical response is to keep sessions short enough to observe the cat, pause to check its response, and stop when it disengages or signals discomfort.
