How to Plan for Your Pet’s Care

A living pet-care plan helps your veterinary team, trusted helpers, and responders care for your animal when you cannot. Here’s what to include.

A useful pet-care plan does more than list a veterinarian’s phone number: it lets someone else care for your animal if you are away, overwhelmed, or unable to help. Build one living plan that covers routine veterinary care, costs, trusted caregivers, essential records, and emergencies—and share it with the people who may need to use it.

Start with your veterinary team

Your veterinarian can help tailor preventive care to your animal’s health, age, lifestyle, and location. Ask about vaccinations, parasite prevention, nutrition, weight, behavior, age-related care, and which changes or symptoms warrant urgent attention. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) describes the owner and veterinarian as a team for a pet’s health and encourages owners to raise questions about health, nutrition, behavior, and exercise. Read the AVMA’s pet-care guidance and browse its resources for pet owners.

Keep the clinic’s contact information and your pet’s current records in the plan. Ask the veterinary team how to obtain records quickly if another person must take your pet in.

Can you afford a dog—or another pet?

Consider the full cost of care before bringing an animal home, and revisit your budget as its needs change. AVMA’s dog-selection guidance names possible expenses beyond adoption or purchase and food: routine and emergency veterinary treatment, grooming, boarding, licensing, identification, sterilization, training, and accessories. Those are cost categories, not a universal estimate; your total will depend on the animal, location, and care needs. AVMA’s dog-selection guidance can help prospective owners think through the commitment.

Do you need pet insurance?

Pet insurance is one option to investigate for unexpected illness or injury expenses; it is not a substitute for budgeting or a guarantee that every bill will be covered. Compare current policy documents rather than relying on a headline price. Check what is covered and excluded, how reimbursement works, the deductible, waiting periods, and the premium. Terms and costs vary by policy, animal, and location. AVMA notes insurance as one possible way to help defray unexpected expenses, but does not identify a universally best policy.

Make a pet portfolio another person can use

Prepare three pieces: a Pet Alert Card, a visible home Emergency Contact Sheet, and a Pet Portfolio. The ASPCA recommends these elements in its pet-planning guidance. Put the information where a trusted helper can find it, and give copies to the people who may care for your pet.

  • Identity and contacts: your pet’s name and description, current identification details, your contact information, an emergency contact, and your veterinary clinic’s details.
  • Daily care: food and feeding preferences, routines, handling preferences, and anything that helps the animal feel secure.
  • Health: known conditions, medications and instructions, veterinary records, and relevant care needs.
  • Behavior and safety: how your pet responds to adults, children, other animals, unfamiliar settings, and handling. Include practical precautions for a caregiver.

Keep sensitive information secure, but make sure the people who need it can access it in an emergency. Review the portfolio when contact details, medications, routines, or health needs change.

Who will care for your pet if you are away or unable to help?

Name a nearby temporary helper who can reach your pet and, if necessary, enter your home. Separately identify a long-term caregiver in case you cannot resume care. A temporary helper does not have to become the permanent caregiver. Ask each person directly whether they are willing and able to take on the role, explain what it involves, and check in periodically to make sure the arrangement still works.

For more than one animal, decide whether keeping them together matters and whether one person can realistically care for all of them. Start early if a pet has specialized needs. If no individual is a suitable option, the ASPCA suggests contacting local humane societies or rescue groups; some equines or exotic animals may be better suited to a specialized sanctuary or retirement home. Avoid instructions to euthanize an adoptable animal.

How can a future caregiver be supported?

Estimate the annual cost of your pet’s care, including medical needs, and consider the animal’s life expectancy. The ASPCA says a gift to a future caregiver is not necessary, but may ease the burden. Its guidance distinguishes among arrangements such as an informal agreement, directions in a will, and a pet trust; the right choice depends on the situation and local law.

A will may direct care or funds, but the ASPCA cautions that probate can take time and a will does not create a continuing obligation after estate administration. A trust may be worth discussing with a lawyer for a complex or costly situation, such as pets that must stay together or animals with substantial medical needs. The ASPCA also mentions lifetime trusts, limited powers of attorney, and letters of instruction; a letter of instruction is generally not legally binding. State rules differ, so consult a local attorney for binding estate instructions.

Prepare your pet for an emergency or evacuation

Before an emergency, identify places that will accept your pet: friends or family outside the area, pet-friendly lodging, boarding, a shelter, or a foster option. Not all shelters accept animals. Follow evacuation directions from local and state officials, and plan for each species and its particular needs.

Keep current identification on your pet and veterinary contact information with your supplies. The ASPCA describes a microchip as a more permanent form of identification. Keep a carrier or travel crate and a grab-and-go kit where you can reach them quickly. Its disaster-preparedness checklist includes:

  • Food, water, bowls, and any needed litter or sanitation supplies.
  • Medications, along with medical-record copies in a waterproof container.
  • A spare collar or harness and leash, plus a sturdy carrier.
  • Recent photos of your pet and contact information for your veterinary clinic.
  • A pet first aid kit and guidebook. Ask your veterinarian what the kit should contain; it is not a substitute for professional care.

Check the ASPCA checklist for its current supply and rotation recommendations. Rotate stored food and medications before they expire, and update supplies as your pet’s needs change.
