Begin preparing your dog before the baby arrives: review health and behavior with your veterinarian, ease into likely routine changes, and get the home’s boundaries in place. Introduce baby-related sights and sounds gradually, at a pace your dog can handle. A dog’s rescue background does not, by itself, predict how it will respond to an infant; make a plan around the individual dog, and keep dog and baby separated whenever an adult cannot directly supervise them.

Start with your individual dog, not the label “rescue”

Dogs adopted from shelters or other caregivers can have very different histories. Ask what is known about the dog’s past experience with children, but treat missing information as uncertainty—not proof that the dog is either safe or unsafe around a baby. Focus on what you observe now, including how your dog responds to household changes, unfamiliar sounds, handling, and being asked to settle.

Arrange a veterinary visit before the birth to discuss health, vaccinations, parasite control, and behavior. Mention any existing anxiety, fear, guarding, reactivity, or other concerns; a brief journal noting what happened, when, and what your dog did can make patterns easier to describe. UC Davis recommends planning with a veterinarian ahead of the baby’s arrival: Baby Introduction: A Step by Step Guide to Facilitating Dog Adjustments.

Prepare the routine and home before the baby arrives

Shift the schedule gradually

Over the weeks before the birth, move walks, meals, rest periods, and attention toward the routine you expect to manage afterward. Small, gradual changes give your dog time to adapt rather than making the baby’s arrival coincide with a sudden loss of familiar patterns. If you expect to have less time or energy, arrange a family member, friend, or pet sitter to help with walks and care. The U.S. government’s Steps for Introducing Infants and Pets recommends discussing an individual plan with a veterinarian and practicing environmental and schedule changes in advance.

Set up boundaries and a retreat

Install baby gates or establish other secure boundaries before they become urgently necessary, then let your dog get used to them while the household is still familiar. Decide which areas will be off-limits and make sure your dog has a quiet place to rest away from baby activity. A gate helps manage access; it does not replace direct supervision when dog and baby share a space.

Practice everyday logistics

If you plan to walk with a stroller, practice handling the stroller and walking route before the baby comes home. Also decide who will care for your dog during a hospital stay or other time away. These practical preparations reduce the chance that unfamiliar equipment, disrupted care, and household changes all arrive at once. Oregon Veterinary Medical Association guidance on introducing a pet to a baby also emphasizes planning for the transition.

Introduce baby-related changes in manageable steps

Let your dog investigate baby equipment under supervision and introduce relevant sounds and household activities gradually. Keep the volume or intensity low enough that your dog can remain relaxed; increase exposure only as it is comfortable. Reward calm observation. If your dog starts chewing or carrying baby items, calmly redirect it to its own appropriate toys rather than turning the item into a confrontation. The ASPCA’s Dogs and Babies guidance covers gradual familiarization with baby-related sights, sounds, and activities.

Plan the first meeting and ongoing supervision

Keep the first encounter calm and voluntary

Choose a calm time and have one adult focus on the dog. Keep enough distance for the dog to stay relaxed, and do not force sniffing, closeness, or a greeting. Let the dog move away. If it seems fearful, overexcited, or intensely focused on the baby, increase distance and use a barrier rather than trying to lure it closer with food or toys.

When the dog is relaxed near the baby, you can reward that calm behavior without using a reward to draw a worried dog into contact. UC Davis advises controlled introductions and allowing the dog room to disengage. The 2008 review “Expanding families: preparing for and introducing dogs and cats to infants, children, and new pets” likewise supports patience, controlled introductions, and rewarding appropriate behavior; it is a general review, not a rescue-dog-specific study.

Supervise directly or separate

Whenever dog and newborn are in the same space, an adult must be actively watching and close enough to intervene. If that adult cannot give direct attention—even briefly—place a secure barrier between them or keep them in separate rooms. Do not leave a baby and dog together unattended.

Keep adapting the plan as the baby grows. Reaching, crawling, new sounds, and unpredictable movement change what the dog experiences, so a calm newborn introduction is not a permanent safety clearance. The ASPCA’s guidance on dogs and babies addresses supervision as children develop.

Respond early to signs that the plan needs more support

If your dog shows fear, anxiety, growling, snapping, biting, chasing, intense fixation, or another concerning change, end the interaction and separate dog and baby. Do not punish a warning or press the dog to continue; create distance and discuss what happened with your veterinarian before resuming close contact. Your veterinarian can assess health and behavior and, when appropriate, refer you to a veterinary behaviorist or qualified reward-based trainer. If you cannot reliably maintain supervision and separation, ask for individualized help planning a more conservative arrangement.

There is no established statistic here that predicts how rescue dogs as a group adjust to newborns. Preparation is general guidance, not a guarantee about any particular dog; the dog’s health and behavior, household setup, and caregivers’ ability to manage contact all matter. The RSPCA Australia also explains why a newborn’s safety around a dog cannot be assumed: Will my newborn baby be safe around my dog?
