The least stressful vet visit starts days or weeks before the appointment. Practice the touches, carrier or car routine your pet will encounter, tell the clinic about fear or pain in advance, and follow that clinic’s specific instructions about food, water, medication, and arrival. Dogs usually benefit from brief reward-based handling and pleasant car rides. Cats need gradual carrier training, secure enclosed transport, and as little visual and physical stress as possible.
Start with the appointment details
When you book the visit, ask what this particular appointment involves. A routine wellness examination may have different food, water, medication, or arrival instructions from a procedure requiring sedation or anesthesia. The general guidance from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) does not establish one fasting rule for every pet or every visit.

Tell the practice about anything that could change the plan: freezing, intense vocalizing, escape attempts, aggression, vomiting, drooling, motion sickness, difficulty getting into a carrier, or resistance to touch. Also mention a suspected injury or pain. The team may schedule a quieter arrival, reduce waiting-room exposure, change the handling sequence, or discuss a veterinary-prescribed medication when clinically appropriate.

- Ask whether your pet should eat, drink, or receive regular medicines before this appointment.
- Ask where to wait on arrival if your dog is reactive or your cat is frightened by other animals.
- Explain the carrier, car, handling, and recovery problems you have seen at home.
- Ask whether the clinic wants records, medication containers, a stool sample, urine sample, or video of an unusual behavior.
Do not give a human medicine or an over-the-counter calming product unless your veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.

Prepare your dog before appointment day
Practice the touches used in an examination
Several days or weeks beforehand, work in very short sessions when your dog is relaxed. Touch one area lightly, immediately offer a reward or play, and stop before the dog wants to leave. Gradually build toward the kinds of contact a veterinary team may need:
- lifting and examining each paw;
- touching the ears and looking at the ear opening;
- lifting the lips briefly to expose the teeth;
- running a hand over the neck, chest, abdomen, back, and legs;
- holding the collar or harness while another person approaches.
Use a reward your dog values and can safely have. A soft treat, toy, or brief game is an aid, not a guarantee that fear will disappear. If your dog pulls away, stiffens, growls, snaps, or stops taking food, make the next session easier and ask the clinic for a behavior and handling plan.
Make car rides ordinary and positive
Do not make every car trip end at the hospital. Begin with sitting in a stationary vehicle, then a brief drive, and eventually a pleasant destination such as a walk, provided your dog travels safely and the clinic has no contrary instructions. Keep trips short enough that your dog can remain composed. Use the restraint system or carrier the practice recommends; arrive with the dog secured on a leash or in a carrier rather than loose in the vehicle.

A familiar toy or soft bedding can make the setting less strange. Bring a high-value treat only if your veterinary team permits feeding and your dog does not have a condition or procedure that makes food inappropriate. If the visit may involve sedation, imaging, blood work, or another procedure, confirm the clinic’s instructions before packing food.

Get a cat comfortable with the carrier
Choose a carrier that supports examination and travel
FelineVMA guidance favors a sturdy, secure, well-ventilated carrier that is large enough for the cat to sit, turn, and lie down comfortably and that can be cleaned. A removable top or top-opening design is especially useful: the veterinary team may be able to examine the cat in the bottom half instead of pulling a frightened animal through a small door.
| Carrier feature | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stable construction | Reduces swinging and sudden movement. | It does not flex, collapse, or open when lifted from underneath. |
| Secure closures | Prevents escapes in the home, car, and clinic. | Doors and latches close fully and cannot be pushed open by the cat. |
| Ventilation | Allows airflow during travel and while covered. | Openings remain unobstructed when a blanket is used. |
| Removable or wide top | Lets staff reduce handling and examine the cat more gently. | The top detaches reliably and the base remains stable. |
| Easy-clean surfaces | Helps after vomiting, urination, or an accident. | Use a washable liner rather than loose material that can block vents. |
| Appropriate size | Allows normal posture without leaving excessive space for sliding. | The cat can turn and lie down without being cramped. |
Turn the carrier into a familiar place
- Put the carrier in a room where your cat already rests, with the door open or the top removed if the design allows it.
- Add familiar bedding. Let the cat investigate voluntarily; do not chase or push the cat inside.
- Reward looking at, approaching, or resting in the carrier with praise, play, or a suitable treat.
- Once the cat is comfortable, briefly close the door, reopen it, and reward calm behavior.
- Progress to lifting the carrier a few inches, carrying it a short distance, and returning it to the resting area.
- Practice a short car trip only after the carrier itself is no longer a novel threat.
Move in small steps over days or weeks. If your cat already panics around the carrier, forcing a training session can make the association worse. Pause and ask the veterinary team for a slower plan. As feline veterinarian Ilona Rodan put it in an AAHA expert interview published February 27, 2026, “The number one thing is carrier training.”
Travel safely to the clinic
Cat transport
Keep the cat enclosed for the entire journey. Carry the carrier from underneath with both hands so it stays level; lifting it by the handle can make the carrier swing. A light cover may give a cat a visual refuge, but never cover ventilation openings.
FelineVMA’s 2025 Transportation of Cats in Motor Vehicles Position Statement recommends placing the carrier on the vehicle floor behind a front seat. Use a seat belt only when the carrier is crash-test certified for that use. An ordinary carrier held by a seat belt has not thereby been shown to provide crash protection. Never open the carrier in the car, parking lot, or other unsecured area, even if the cat is vocalizing.

Dog transport
Use a properly fitted leash, harness, or carrier according to your clinic’s instructions. Check that doors, clips, and harness buckles are secure before leaving home. A dog that normally walks calmly may try to bolt when frightened, so keep the leash attached before opening a vehicle door.
If travel causes vomiting or drooling
Report motion sickness before the visit. The veterinarian can decide whether travel changes, appointment timing, feeding adjustments, or a prescribed treatment are suitable. Do not improvise with human medication. Vomiting, heavy drooling, frantic scratching, or repeated escape attempts are information the team can use to make the next journey safer.
Plan a low-stress arrival
Call or message the clinic before leaving if your pet is fearful, reactive, painful, or difficult to restrain. AAHA’s wellness-visit guidance describes quiet arrival options and reducing waiting-room encounters for anxious dogs. For cats, advance notice can allow the practice to prepare a calmer route and discuss medication when medically appropriate.
- Bring the pet secured in the recommended leash, harness, or carrier.
- On arrival, tell staff exactly how the journey went: panting, hiding, vocalizing, vomiting, drooling, or attempts to escape.
- Describe what helped, such as a cover, distance from other animals, a particular reward, or allowing time before handling.
- For a cat, keep the carrier closed and level until the veterinary team is ready. Do not tip it, drag the cat out, or let the cat roam in the waiting room.
- Follow staff directions if they ask you to wait in the car, use a separate room, or enter through another door.
These measures do not promise a fear-free experience. Sarah Heath, BVSc, DipECAWBM (BM), PGCert, Vet Ed FHEA, FRCVS, told AAHA that “Removing fear entirely isn’t realistic.” The practical goal is to reduce avoidable triggers and give the team enough information to work safely.

What to bring and what to tell the veterinarian
Bring a current list of every medicine, supplement, and preventive product your pet receives, including dose and schedule. Note changes in appetite, thirst, elimination, sleep, mobility, vocalization, or behavior. A short home video can help demonstrate coughing, limping, seizures, scratching, or an interaction that does not occur in the clinic.
During the appointment, describe your observations rather than trying to diagnose them. Ask what the clinician is checking, what alternatives exist, which signs require a follow-up call, and when results are expected. AAHA’s owner guidance emphasizes two-way communication: you should be involved in decisions and be able to explain the plan back in your own words.
Take pain seriously
Resistance to being touched is not always a training problem. It can signal pain. In an AAHA article dated February 27, 2026, Sarah Heath attributed an estimate that 96 to 97 percent of cats older than 12 have osteoarthritis. The article did not identify the original study or its year, so treat the figure as an expert-attributed estimate rather than a verified primary-study statistic. Regardless of the percentage, a cat or dog that suddenly resists handling, jumps less, hides, or becomes irritable should be assessed rather than pushed through practice exercises.

Should you feed your pet before the appointment?
Ask the clinic for instructions for this exact visit. There is no universal rule in the available guidance that applies to every examination, procedure, age, illness, or medication. A routine check may be handled differently from anesthesia, imaging, or a test that requires an empty stomach.

Write the instructions down. If more than one person feeds or medicates the pet, make sure everyone follows the same plan.
After the examination: help your pet decompress
Follow the discharge instructions before leaving, including medication, activity limits, feeding, wound care, and warning signs. Give your pet a quiet place to recover at home. Keep children and other animals from crowding a pet that is tired, sore, sedated, or unusually defensive.
In a multi-cat household, a returning cat may smell unfamiliar after the clinic. Other cats may hiss, avoid, or confront it. Prepare a separate comfortable room with water, litter, bedding, and hiding options, and allow gradual reintroduction if the household does not settle quickly. Do not force contact.
Call the practice if your pet has breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, uncontrolled pain, collapse, prolonged inability to wake, a worsening wound, or any discharge instruction you cannot interpret. For non-urgent questions, use the clinic’s preferred follow-up channel and report what happened, when it started, and what you have already given.
A practical preparation checklist
Several days or weeks before
- Book the appointment and ask about food, water, medication, samples, and arrival procedures.
- Tell the clinic about fear, aggression, escape behavior, motion sickness, drooling, vomiting, or possible pain.
- Practice brief, reward-based handling with your dog.
- Leave the cat carrier open in a familiar area and build comfort gradually.
- Take short, safe car rides that do not always end at the clinic.
The day before
- Confirm the appointment time and any procedure-specific instructions.
- Prepare the leash, harness, carrier, bedding, permitted treats, medication list, and questions.
- Check that carrier doors, latches, leash clips, and harness fittings work.
- Plan the quietest route and ask whether you can wait away from other animals.
On the day
- Follow the clinic’s feeding, water, and medication directions exactly.
- Keep the cat in the closed carrier and carry it level from underneath.
- Keep the dog leashed or safely contained before opening a vehicle door.
- Tell staff what happened during travel and what calmed or upset your pet.
- Ask questions and repeat the home-care plan before leaving.
When preparation needs professional help
Contact the veterinary team before the appointment if your pet cannot be approached, attempts to bite or escape, becomes sick in the car, or appears painful when touched. Ask whether the visit should be structured differently, whether a behavior professional should be involved, and whether a veterinarian-prescribed medication is appropriate. Medication is not automatically needed for every pet, and it should be selected and timed by the veterinary team for that animal and appointment.
Preventive care should not be skipped because transport is difficult. Early communication gives the clinic options to make necessary care safer and more tolerable for both the pet and the people handling them.
