Before your kitten explores, get down to floor level and remove hazards, then secure anything dangerous behind a closed door or out of reach. Work through these six checks room by room, and repeat them as your kitten grows and learns to climb.
1. Sweep floors and low surfaces for small objects
Look under furniture and along baseboards for hair ties, rubber bands, coins, small toys, plastic bags and other items a kitten could chew or swallow. Check reachable tables and shelves too; a kitten’s climbing skills can quickly make yesterday’s safe surface accessible. The ASPCA recommends inspecting from a pet’s perspective and repeating the check as the animal develops (ASPCA home-preparation checklist; ASPCA preparation tips).

2. Identify every plant before your kitten can reach it
Check houseplants and any garden greenery your kitten might access against a reliable cat-toxicity resource. Remove toxic plants from the kitten’s environment rather than relying on a deterrent. Lilies are a particularly serious hazard: pollen, leaves, stems, flowers and even vase water can cause kidney failure in cats. Hide or cover electrical cords, and secure dangling blind and curtain pulls. Put away yarn, ribbon, string and similar objects when play is not supervised. Chewed electrical cords can cause severe burns and other injury; swallowed string can lodge in the digestive tract and may require emergency surgery. Cord covers, ties or cabinet-style latches can help keep a hazard inaccessible, but inspect them for looseness or damage. They do not make exposed cords or strings safe to leave within reach.
4. Put medicines and household chemicals behind closed doors
Store medications, cleaners, pesticides and laundry products in closed, inaccessible cabinets. Retrieve dropped pills promptly. Laundry detergent pods and liquids can irritate the mouth and throat and cause serious symptoms; swallowed dryer sheets can cause chemical burns or an obstruction. 5. Check windows and enclosed hiding places
Make sure windows latch and screens are secure, and keep your kitten away from open or inadequately screened windows. Before closing or operating anything, check washers, dryers, drawers, cabinets, laundry baskets and other tempting enclosed spaces. Kittens may slip into a hiding place before you notice; check again each time you use an appliance or close a compartment (ASPCA checklist; AAHA kitten checklist).
6. Keep food, trash, candles and risky rooms out of reach
Cover garbage or move it somewhere your kitten cannot enter. Do not leave food, medicines, cleaners or candles on counters or other accessible surfaces. If a room contains hazards while your kitten settles in, close it off or use a suitable gate. Cabinet latches and gates are useful aids, not substitutes for removing hazards and supervising exploration (ASPCA checklist; ASPCA preparation tips).
