Cover the spot your dog uses most
A washable blanket or slipcover creates a barrier between your dog and the upholstery. It can catch loose hair, dirt, and drool and help shield the couch surface from scratches. Choose a cover that fits the area the dog actually uses, rather than assuming a small throw will protect an entire seat. Consider how easily it can be washed, whether its fabric is likely to snag on nails, and whether a waterproof backing would help with moisture. Remove hair before it works into the fabric
Start with a vacuum on the cushions and in the cracks. For stubborn hair left on the surface, use a pet-hair roller; use a detailing tool for seams, corners, and curved areas a broad vacuum attachment may miss. Hair tends to be easier to remove before it becomes embedded, so make cleanup part of the household routine. Brushing your dog can reduce the amount of loose coat hair that reaches the couch, but how often to brush depends on coat type and shedding; there is no single schedule for every dog. On leather, a microfiber cloth can pick up hair that does not embed as deeply as it can in fabric.

Check the couch’s care code before cleaning
Before using water, solvent, steam, or a powered cleaner, find the couch’s care tag or the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Cleaning codes identify which methods are suitable for a particular fabric; they are not interchangeable. La-Z-Boy, for example, explains that its furniture tag carries the cleaning code and distinguishes water-based cleaning, water-free solvent, combined methods, and fabrics that should be vacuumed or lightly brushed only. - Follow the instructions for the specific couch, not a general upholstery recipe.
- Pretest a cleaning method where the manufacturer calls for it, and do not saturate fabric when the instructions say not to.
- Do not assume a cushion cover that looks removable is machine-washable. Check the furniture maker’s instructions before removing or washing it.
- If the code is unclear, the stain persists, the material is delicate, or the couch is heavily soiled, contact the manufacturer or a professional upholstery cleaner.
Handle urine promptly, using a method the upholstery allows
For a fresh accident
Act promptly and absorb as much liquid as you can without spreading it. Rinsing or extracting may be appropriate for some materials, but upholstery cleanup depends on the couch fabric and its care instructions. Check those instructions before using a liquid or specialized pet-stain product, and follow the product label. For dried urine or an odor that remains
For dried urine on fabric or carpet, AKC advises rinsing and extracting; if odor remains, an enzymatic cleaner designed for pet stains may be used. That does not mean every enzymatic cleaner is safe for every couch: use one only when the couch’s care instructions and the cleaner’s label both allow the method. The Humane Society of the United States warns against steam-cleaning urine from upholstery or carpet because heat may permanently set the stain and odor. Residual scent can draw a pet back to an accident area. The Humane Society’s 2020 guide says, “As long as your pet can smell their personal scent, they will continue to return to the ‘accident zone.’” Its guidance and AKC’s advice differ on vinegar in some general cleanup suggestions: the Humane Society cautions that strong odors may encourage repeat marking, while AKC offers vinegar in some do-it-yourself advice. Neither is a reason to disregard a couch’s care code. Avoid treating homemade cleaners as universally safe for upholstery.
