Fence off tomato plants so your dog cannot reach the vines, then pick up fallen tomatoes and clippings and keep compost secured. Tomato leaves and stems can be toxic to dogs, and green tomatoes should also be kept out of reach. If your dog may have eaten any part of the plant, contact a veterinarian or pet poison-control service promptly.
Are tomato plants poisonous to dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA lists tomato plants as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, identifying solanine as the toxic principle. It describes ripe tomato fruit as non-toxic, but leaves and stems are toxic; unripe green tomatoes should also be kept away from dogs. The amount eaten and the plant material involved affect the risk, so a dog’s exposure cannot be judged from appearance alone.

Possible signs listed by the ASPCA include hypersalivation, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal upset, depression, weakness, dilated pupils, and a slow heart rate. Pet Poison Helpline also describes gastrointestinal distress and neurological signs such as lethargy, stumbling, or disorientation after eating large amounts of green tomatoes, leaves, or stems. These signs are not a way to confirm or rule out poisoning.

How to keep your dog out of tomato plants
Put a physical barrier between your dog and the plants
Fence around the bed or growing area, choosing a barrier your particular dog cannot readily go around, under, or over. Account for the dog’s size, jumping or climbing habits, and any gaps at the edges. Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital recommends fencing or raised beds; Pet Poison Helpline likewise advises barriers. No source establishes one fence height or design that works for every dog.

Use raised beds or elevated containers where they fit
Raised beds and elevated containers can separate plants from pets, especially in a small garden or patio. They are not a guaranteed substitute for a barrier: consider whether your dog can reach or jump into them, and keep dropped fruit and debris inaccessible as well. Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine collegiate assistant professor Virginia Edwards suggests “raised beds to keep produce off the ground or fencing around parts that you don’t want to share with your pets.”
Remove tempting leftovers and secure compost
Pick up fallen tomatoes, including green ones, and put plant clippings somewhere your dog cannot reach. Keep compost secured; a fenced living plant does not protect a dog from scraps or fruit left nearby.

Teach “leave it” as backup
A reliable “leave it” cue can help if your dog approaches the garden, but it is an extra layer of protection, not a replacement for a physical barrier. Do not rely on a low border, training alone, or an unverified homemade repellent to keep a dog safe.

What to do if your dog may have eaten a tomato plant
- Contact a veterinarian or pet poison-control service promptly. Explain which part may have been eaten, whether the fruit was green or ripe, roughly how much may be missing, and when it happened. Risk depends on the animal, amount, and plant part.
- Watch for changes while you get professional advice. Concerning signs can include vomiting or other gastrointestinal upset, weakness, lethargy, stumbling, disorientation, or unusual behavior. Do not wait for signs to appear before seeking advice if ingestion is suspected.
- Follow the professional’s instructions. Do not try to diagnose the exposure or decide that it is safe based on a guessed dose threshold. The FDA advises prompt contact with a veterinarian or pet poison-control center when a pet may have eaten something dangerous.
