Protecting pets during hurricane season starts before a storm is forecast: choose a safe destination and backup, prepare a go bag for every animal, and make sure each pet can be identified if separated. Take pets with you when you evacuate; do not assume a public shelter or hotel will accept them.

Make a pet-specific evacuation plan

Choose a destination outside the threatened area before hurricane warnings begin, plus a backup in case the first option is unavailable. Possible safe havens include a pet-friendly hotel or motel, a boarding facility, or the home of friends or family. Many public shelters and hotels do not allow pets, according to Ready.gov, so contact each place directly to confirm its current rules and availability.

When checking an option, ask whether it accepts your pets’ species and number, what records or vaccinations are required, whether you must bring carriers or crates, and how far it is from the evacuation area. Confirm arrangements for the current event rather than relying on an old listing or assumption.

Arrange a backup caregiver

Ask a trusted neighbor, friend, or relative to be your designated caregiver if you cannot get home. Share your evacuation plan, where the carriers and supplies are kept, and how to reach you and your veterinarian. Make sure the person can handle the number and types of animals in your household.

Plan for every animal and every ride

Account for each pet’s transport needs and any medical or behavioral accommodations. Keep carriers, leashes, collars, and the packed supplies where household members can reach them quickly, and tell everyone where they are. Local emergency instructions take priority over a general plan.

Pack a go bag for each pet

The ASPCA’s September 1, 2026 checklist recommends preparing at least seven to ten days of food and water and two weeks of medication for each pet. Store supplies so they are easy to carry with the animal, and review them regularly to replace anything expired, depleted, or unusable.

Pack for each pet What to include
Food and water At least seven to ten days’ worth of the pet’s normal food and water, plus bowls. Include a manual can opener if the food requires one.
Medication and care information Two weeks of medication, along with veterinary and emergency-clinic contact details and the pet’s medical information. Ask your veterinarian about medication choices and first-aid supplies for your animal.
Identification and records Current vaccination and medical records, microchip information, and a recent photo. Keep accessible digital copies and protected paper copies.
Restraint and transport A carrier or crate for each pet, spare collar and leash, and owner and pet contact information written on the carrier.
Comfort and cleanup Familiar bedding or toys, litter or newspaper as appropriate, cleanup bags, and a first-aid kit suited to the animal.

These are core supplies, not a one-size-fits-all kit. Ask your veterinarian about additional needs for animals with medical or behavioral concerns, and tailor supplies to the species you care for.

Keep identification and reunion information current

Check that each pet’s collar tag has current contact details, and verify that the contact information linked to its registered microchip is up to date. Put your contact information on carriers as well. Keep a current photo and medical records somewhere you can access during an evacuation; paper copies protected from water can complement digital records.

What to do when a hurricane threatens

  1. Follow local emergency instructions. Use the evacuation guidance issued for your area and go to the destination you confirmed in advance.
  2. Bring pets indoors when a storm or disaster warning begins. Pets can become disoriented during a crisis, so keep them close and ready for transport.
  3. Take the animals and their supplies with you. ASPCA disaster guidance says not to leave pets behind; a rescue alert sticker is only a contingency if an animal remains in the home, not a substitute for evacuation planning.
  4. Use your backup plan if needed. Contact the designated caregiver or alternate destination if your first arrangement is unavailable or you cannot return home.

Prepare before the next warning

  • Confirm a primary and backup pet-friendly destination, including current event rules.
  • Pack and label supplies separately for each animal, and keep them near an exit.
  • Share the plan with household members and your designated caregiver.
  • Refresh food, water, and medications before they expire or run low.
  • Review the ASPCA’s pet preparedness checklist, disaster planning guidance, and Ready.gov’s pet disaster preparation guide.

The ASPCA reported in September 2024 that its disaster response team had responded to more than 77 disasters and assisted over 128,000 animals since the team began in 2010. Those are the organization’s cumulative figures, not hurricane-specific outcomes.
