Before your rescue puppy arrives, prepare one small, supervised area rather than opening the whole home. Get down to puppy level, remove or secure hazards, set up barriers, check the yard, and arrange an early veterinary visit. Expand access gradually as you learn what this puppy can safely handle.
1. Choose a puppy-safe area
Select a room or bounded space where you can supervise the puppy and remove hazards. Decide which rooms will stay off limits at first. A baby gate can block a doorway; an exercise pen can create a smaller play area. Keeping the puppy in a prepared zone makes it easier to manage exploration than allowing free access throughout the home.
Before arrival, put barriers in place and check that they suit the puppy’s size and behavior. Consider whether the puppy could climb over, push through, or chew them, and whether the layout lets you supervise. A crate can also be a short-term safe space when introduced positively and used appropriately for the individual puppy. Pairing a crate or pen with a treat and chew toy can help make the space more inviting.
2. Inspect the home from the puppy’s level
Crouch or sit on the floor and look under and behind furniture, along walls, and around the edges of the area. Anything the puppy can reach may be chewed, swallowed, spilled, or pulled down. Remove small objects, breakables, valuables, sharp items, and tempting chew targets before the puppy explores.

- Cords and blind cords: Route, cover, or secure electrical cords, and keep accessible blind cords out of reach to reduce chewing and entanglement hazards.
- Medicines and cleaning products: Store them in closed or secured cabinets rather than on counters or low shelves.
- Food and rubbish: Secure human food and use a lidded or otherwise inaccessible bin. Keep the puppy away from trash and its contents.
- Plants and small objects: Remove access to plants that may be toxic to dogs and to objects small enough to swallow or choke on.
- Sharp items and appliances: Put tools and other sharp objects away, and block access to appliances where a puppy could become trapped or injured.
- Windows, toilets, and other openings: Close or block access to places that could create a fall, entrapment, or other hazard.
Keep the puppy supervised while it explores, even in a room you have checked. Puppy-proofing reduces risks but cannot account for every new behavior or change in reach.
3. Check the yard before allowing outdoor access
Inspect the yard as carefully as the indoor space. Walk the fence line and look for gaps a small puppy could slip through. Check that the puppy cannot reach a pool, toxic plants, chemicals, or areas treated recently with lawn or garden products. Provide access to shade and consider heat exposure. Do not leave a young puppy outside alone; supervise outdoor time directly.

4. Prepare the right containment supplies
Choose barriers according to the space you need to control and the puppy you are bringing home. A gate is useful for keeping a room or hallway off limits; an exercise pen can define a temporary bounded area; a crate may suit a puppy who is being introduced to it gradually and positively. There is no single option that fits every home.
- Check the barrier’s fit with doorways, room layout, and the puppy’s size.
- Consider whether the puppy can climb, push through, or chew the barrier.
- Use containment to manage access, not as a substitute for supervision.
- Make the space pleasant with appropriate comfort items and a puppy-appropriate chew toy.
5. Arrange rescue-specific veterinary follow-up
Ask the rescue for whatever health and vaccination records are available, then schedule a prompt veterinary examination. A rescue puppy’s history may be incomplete, so avoid assuming that all prior care is known. The veterinarian can advise on vaccinations, parasite control, nutrition, socialization, and other needs based on this puppy’s circumstances. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends a veterinary exam and individualized guidance: AVMA: Bringing a new pet home. The American Kennel Club also notes the importance of an early exam for shelter and rescue dogs: AKC: Your Puppy’s First Vet Visit.

6. Recheck the space during the first days
Start with the prepared area, supervise exploration, and expand access in stages. Revisit the room and yard as you learn what the puppy can reach, chew, or move. A space that seemed safe before arrival may need changes once you see the puppy’s behavior.
If you suspect the puppy has swallowed a dangerous item or contacted a poison, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. ASPCA guidance lists the U.S. Animal Poison Control Center number as 888-426-4435; its page was published in 2018, so confirm current contact details and instructions directly before relying on them: ASPCA Animal Poison Control.

Before-arrival checklist
- Choose one supervised puppy-safe area and decide which rooms stay closed.
- Inspect at floor level; remove small, sharp, breakable, valuable, or chewable objects.
- Secure cords, blind cords, medicines, cleaners, food, trash, and plants.
- Block access to appliances, toilets, windows, and other fall or entrapment hazards.
- Check fencing, pool access, plants, recently treated areas, shade, and heat outdoors.
- Install appropriate gates or a pen; introduce any crate positively.
- Request available records from the rescue and book an early veterinary exam.
