Check the release and fit before letting your cat go, then inspect the collar and the skin underneath regularly.
1. Choose a cat-safe collar
Pick a collar designed for cats with a quick-release or snap-opening closure. If it catches on something, this type is intended to open so your cat is less likely to become trapped. Avoid elasticated collars: a cat’s leg or jaw can catch in an elasticated or poorly fitting collar, potentially causing serious injury. Cats Protection explains the risks and collar guidance, and its safety advice also recommends a quick-release design.

2. Open the collar and place it around your cat’s neck
Undo the closure and gently bring the collar around your cat’s neck. Keep it lying flat and comfortably positioned; do not twist it or force it into place. If your cat resists, pause and try again when they are calm rather than struggling to fasten it.
3. Adjust the fit
Fasten the collar and adjust its length until you can slide two fingers comfortably between it and your cat’s neck. The collar should be snug enough not to hang loose, but not tight against the skin. A collar that is too loose can let a leg or jaw catch; one that is too tight may cause discomfort or skin problems. Blue Cross’s cat-collar guidance also recommends the two-finger fit.

4. Check the release, then keep checking the collar
If you are unsure whether the closure releases easily, Blue Cross advises testing it before putting the collar on: pull the sides to check that it breaks apart without difficulty. Make sure any tag, bell, or tracker is small and light, does not obstruct the release, and does not interfere with your cat’s movement.
Every few days, check that the collar still fits, the closure and material are undamaged, and there are no loose threads. Look at the skin beneath it as well. Replace a damaged collar, and readjust one that has become too loose or tight. Cats Protection and Blue Cross both recommend regular checks. Blue Cross

Does your cat need a collar?
A collar is optional. For permanent identification, Cats Protection describes microchipping as the safest option; a collar should not be treated as a dependable permanent identifier. Flea collars are a separate matter: Cats Protection says they are generally not very effective and may irritate the skin, so ask your vet about suitable flea treatment instead.
