Then check the calorie content and feeding directions, compare the guaranteed analysis in context, and choose portions with your veterinarian based on your dog’s growth and body condition. A front-of-bag claim or ingredient list alone cannot establish that a food is suitable.
Start with the food’s life stage and adequacy statement
On a U.S. package, find the nutritional adequacy statement, usually printed with the feeding directions or other product information. It identifies whether the food is complete and balanced for a particular life stage. AAFCO explains that adequacy may be established using nutrient profiles or feeding tests; rely on the method stated on the specific package rather than assuming one applies. AAFCO’s guide to selecting pet food
For a Great Pyrenees puppy expected to weigh 70 lb or more as an adult, look for wording that includes growth of large-size dogs. The 70 lb threshold is AAFCO’s large-size-dog threshold in its growth-statement example, not a claim about the average Great Pyrenees. Do not treat a general “puppy” or “all life stages” phrase on the front of the bag as a substitute for reading the full statement.
Adult maintenance, growth, and reproduction are distinct life-stage claims. Match the statement to your dog’s current needs and ask your veterinarian to confirm the choice, particularly during puppy growth. Label rules vary by country; the AAFCO statement guidance here is U.S.-oriented.

For a puppy, pay attention to controlled growth
Large and giant breed puppies need appropriate growth support, not simply as much food as they will eat. The American Animal Hospital Association says some large- and giant-breed dogs may not reach skeletal maturity until closer to 15–16 months. That is general guidance, not a Great Pyrenees-specific feeding prescription or a universal age to switch foods. AAHA also advises maintaining a lean body condition and avoiding excessive calcium intake. AAHA: Age-specific and Breed-specific Diets
Use the adequacy statement to check that a puppy food is intended for growth of large-size dogs; do not try to infer calcium suitability from a marketing claim or ingredient list. Your veterinarian can advise on the diet and growth plan for your puppy.

Use calories and feeding directions to set a starting portion
Look for calorie content, commonly given as kcal/kg and also per familiar unit such as a cup or can. Compare foods using the same units and serving basis: a per-kilogram figure cannot be directly compared with a per-cup figure. Check the package’s serving directions and measure portions consistently rather than estimating from the bowl.
Feeding directions are a starting point, not an immutable ration. AAFCO notes that directions may need to be adjusted for an individual pet’s needs. Your dog’s age, activity, health, reproductive status, body condition, and growth all affect the right amount; breed alone does not determine an individual calorie requirement. Include treats and other extras when discussing the overall diet and portion with your veterinarian. WSAVA’s label guide also explains calorie statements and feeding details. Read the guaranteed analysis without treating it as a quality score
The guaranteed analysis lists specified nutrient guarantees for the food. WSAVA’s example label shows crude protein and crude fat as minimums, and crude fiber and moisture as maximums. Those are examples of how guarantees may appear, not targets or recommendations for a Great Pyrenees. Read the values on the actual package and interpret them in light of your veterinarian’s plan.
Percentages are generally shown on an as-fed basis, so moisture affects the numbers. A dry food and a wet food can therefore show different percentages without those figures alone telling you which supplies more of a nutrient on a comparable basis. Avoid treating the displayed percentages as a direct dry-versus-wet comparison. The guaranteed analysis is useful label information, but it is not a complete measure of nutritional quality. Use the ingredient list as a declaration, not a ranking
Ingredients are listed by weight, but that order is not a nutritional ranking and does not establish ingredient quality, digestibility, or overall food quality. WSAVA cautions that owners often give the list more weight than it can support. Instead, consider it alongside the adequacy statement, calorie and feeding information, manufacturer details, and how your dog is doing on the food. WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines

Compare foods in a consistent order
When you have two or more options, compare the information that can meaningfully answer whether each food fits your dog:
- Adequacy: Is it for the right species and life stage? For a puppy expected to reach at least 70 lb as an adult, does the statement include growth of large-size dogs?
- Calories and portions: Compare calorie density using the same units, then read each food’s serving directions and measure portions consistently.
- Guaranteed analysis: Review the listed guarantees in the context of your veterinarian’s plan; do not treat them as a standalone quality score.
- Manufacturer: Ask about formulation expertise and quality controls if those details are unclear.
- Your dog’s response: Track tolerance, weight trend, and body condition with your veterinarian’s input.
No single brand or breed-specific formula is established by this guidance. A label can help you screen and compare foods, but your veterinarian should tailor the diet and portion to the individual Great Pyrenees.
