Petting-related aggression can have different causes, and a cat may enjoy your company without wanting to be stroked. The goal is not to suppress warnings or make every cat accept petting; it is to identify discomfort, reduce risk, and choose interactions your cat can tolerate.
1. Have new or unexpected aggression checked by a veterinarian
A sudden change in tolerance deserves veterinary attention before you treat it as a training problem. Pain or illness can make touch unpleasant, especially if a bite happens when you touch one particular area. Problems affecting the joints, limbs, neck, or back, as well as ear or dental inflammation and sensitive skin, may be involved. These possibilities cannot be diagnosed reliably at home.

The ASPCA notes that medical issues can contribute to aggression, and VCA Animal Hospitals recommends veterinary evaluation when pain may be a factor. Tell the veterinarian what happened, where you touched the cat, and whether this behavior is new.
2. Map what happens before the bite
Keep a brief record of the setting and the cat’s response. Note where and how you were petting, how long the contact lasted, what happened immediately beforehand, and the first sign that your cat was uncomfortable. Patterns can help you avoid a trigger and give your veterinarian useful context.

Watch for signals that may appear before a bite:
- A quick turn of the head toward your hand
- Tail twitching or flicking
- Ears rotating or flattening
- Restlessness, body tension, or freezing
- Dilated pupils
- Moving away or otherwise trying to end contact
Signals vary between cats, and some are easy to miss. VCA Animal Hospitals advises: “If you see any of these signs, stop the interaction immediately.”
3. Stop calmly at the first sign of discomfort
End the petting without scolding, grabbing, or trying to hold your cat in place. Give her room to move away and settle. Continuing to stroke her to “get her used to it,” or punishing a growl, swat, or bite, can increase stress and may make future interactions less safe. The ASPCA and VCA both advise against punishment.
If no one is injured, quietly disengage and let the cat relax. A cat’s willingness to sit near you is not an invitation to touch; companionship without petting is a perfectly reasonable way to interact.

4. If your cat tolerates touch, keep practice brief and easy
Only try this when you can safely read your cat’s signals and she is relaxed. VCA describes short, reward-based sessions as one practical approach—not a guaranteed way to change every cat’s preferences.
- Choose a situation and type of touch your cat has previously tolerated.
- Begin with one or two brief pets, stopping before the point at which discomfort has occurred before.
- Use a consistent cue such as “all done” to signal the end, then disengage.
- Offer a small treat for calm tolerance if it suits your cat’s diet and health.
- Increase the amount of contact only gradually, and only while your cat remains relaxed. Stop if you see a warning sign.
The aim is to stay below your cat’s known threshold, not to test how much she can endure. If you cannot predict that threshold, skip practice and prioritize safety.

If your cat prefers activity to touch, try interactive play with a wand toy. Some cats are content to share space, play, or receive attention without being stroked. Let your cat’s response guide the choice rather than treating petting as a required goal.

Ask your veterinarian whether referral to a veterinary behaviorist is appropriate if the behavior is persistent, injurious, or difficult to predict. ASPCA guidance also supports seeking professional help for aggression that is difficult to manage.
What to do if a bite breaks the skin
Cat bites can puncture the skin and become infected. VCA advises caring for the wound and calling a doctor. If a bite occurs, first make the interaction safe by calmly creating distance; do not attempt to punish or restrain the cat.
