You can refresh a catnip toy only if it is intact and designed to be refilled. Check it for damage, follow its care instructions, and add catnip only through its intended opening. A fresh refill may help, but some cats do not respond to catnip at all.
1. Inspect the toy before refreshing it
Check the fabric, seams, closures, feathers, strings, and any small attached pieces. Stop using the toy if it is torn, shedding, or has parts that are loose or easy to detach; a cat may swallow them. Cornell’s guidance on household hazards for cats explains the risks of swallowed string and other foreign objects: Cornell Feline Health Center.
If the toy is dirty, check its label or tag before cleaning. Retire it if it cannot be cleaned as directed or is too worn to be safe.
2. Check whether the toy is refillable
Look for a maker-designed pocket, flap, or closure. If the toy has one, open it as instructed. If it is sewn shut or has no refill feature, do not cut it open: replacing it with a refillable catnip toy is safer than exposing stuffing or creating loose parts.

3. Add catnip through the intended opening
- Use fresh dried catnip and follow the toy maker’s directions.
- Add a modest amount through the refill opening; no universal dose or refresh schedule has been established.
- Close the toy securely before offering it to your cat.
You can also sprinkle dried catnip on the outside of a toy. Zoetis Petcare explains that catnip’s potency declines over time as volatile oils dissipate, but the available guidance does not establish how long it stays effective inside every toy: Zoetis Petcare’s catnip FAQs.
4. Store leftover catnip
Seal unused dried catnip in an airtight container and keep it in the freezer to maintain its potency as long as possible, as Zoetis Petcare advises. Keep the container secured where your cat cannot get into it.

5. Clean only if the toy’s care instructions allow it
Follow the cleaning directions on the toy’s packaging or tag. Do not assume a catnip-filled plush toy can be machine-washed, and do not use disinfectant unless the manufacturer says it is suitable for that toy. Keep your cat away from cleaning products and the toy while it is being cleaned; follow product-label directions and wait until the toy is fully dry before returning it.
The CDC gives cleaning pet toys monthly as an example schedule and recommends cleaning more often when items are visibly dirty or smelly. That is a general cleaning example, not a catnip-refill interval. 6. Offer the toy and watch your cat
Supervise your cat the first time you offer a refreshed toy. Watch for chewing that could expose stuffing or small parts, agitation, coughing, or wheezing. Remove the toy if your cat reacts poorly.
Catnip does not appeal to every cat: VCA Animal Hospitals reports that approximately 50% of cats do not respond. A cat may still enjoy batting, chasing, or carrying a toy without reacting to the catnip. If your cat is uninterested, you can offer the toy without adding more.
