If a cat is trapped on a balcony or ledge, keep yourself safely inside or on stable ground, reduce noise and activity, and call local help if reaching the cat would require climbing or leaning over an edge. Only encourage the cat toward safety from a secure position; never put a person at risk to reach it.
Assess the situation without putting anyone at risk
From a secure place, work out where the cat is, whether it has a clear route back indoors, and whether it appears injured or distressed. Check whether you can open a route from inside without leaning out, climbing, or stepping onto an exposed ledge. Keep children, dogs, crowds, and loud activity away so the cat is less likely to panic.
The Animal and Veterinary Service in Singapore advises assessing whether a ledge rescue can be attempted without serious risk to the person. If reaching the cat would put you in danger, do not attempt it yourself. Read its guidance on rescuing a pet in non-emergency situations.
Encourage the cat only from a secure position
If the situation is stable and the cat has a safe route back, open that route from inside, speak calmly, and give it time. Familiar food or water may encourage it to return, if you can place them without approaching an exposed edge. Cats on high surfaces may come down when ready, according to the Animal and Veterinary Service.

- Do not chase, shout at, or startle the cat.
- Do not reach out to grab it from a balcony edge or ledge.
- Do not create another fall risk by placing objects or climbing equipment where the cat might jump or where a person could lose balance.
If the cat is visibly hurt or highly distressed, the location is unsafe, or the situation is getting worse, move to professional help rather than waiting for it to come down.
Call local help when there is danger or uncertainty
Depending on where you live, the appropriate contact may be your local emergency number, animal-control service, building management, or an animal-rescue organization. Response policies vary, so ask which local service handles animal rescues; do not assume a fire department or animal-control office will attend.

When you call, give the dispatcher:
- The exact address, floor, and side of the building.
- Where the cat is and whether it appears injured or distressed.
- Whether the cat has a route back indoors.
- Any access limitations, especially if reaching it would require a person to climb or lean out.
- Whether weather or exposure is worsening and what safe steps you have already tried.
Escalate promptly if a person would have to take a serious risk, the cat may be injured, conditions are worsening, or calm attempts from a safe position have not worked.
After the cat is recovered—or if it has fallen
Contact a veterinarian immediately after a fall or suspected injury. A cat can look all right at first and still have serious injuries, including fractures, breathing difficulty, shock, or internal injuries. The Ottawa Humane Society advises calling a veterinarian immediately after a fall, and the American Red Cross describes possible injuries associated with falls from high places.

If the cat needs to be moved, contain it gently in a secure carrier or another secure, ventilated enclosure for transport. American Humane recommends safe containment, such as a cat carrier, ventilated box, or small room, when handling a found pet. A carrier is for containment and transport after safe recovery—not a way to reach a cat on a dangerous ledge.

Keep window screens securely fastened. If your cat uses a balcony, enclose it with securely attached fencing or mesh and leave no gaps. The Ottawa Humane Society and ASPCA both warn about falls and recommend preventive barriers or secure screens.
