Set up two separate retreats before your foster puppies arrive: a puppy-proof area the resident dog cannot enter, and a familiar resting place where your resident dog can get away from the puppies. Use a secure gate, exercise pen, or closed room that fits your home and the dogs. Keep food and toys separate, supervise every interaction, and follow the rescue’s and veterinarian’s health precautions. A gate helps manage access; it is not disease quarantine or a substitute for supervision.
How should you arrange safe spaces for foster puppies and a resident dog?
Prepare the spaces before the puppies come home. The puppies need room to sleep, play, and toilet, with a boundary that keeps the resident dog out. The resident dog should keep access to a quiet, familiar retreat that the puppies cannot take over. ASPCA recommends separate space and gradual introductions when a foster caregiver has other pets; VCA likewise advises setting up safe zones and separate beds, food and water, and toys as appropriate for each animal (ASPCA foster guidance; VCA puppy-preparation guidance).
Choose a boundary that fits the dogs and the home
A closed, puppy-proof room offers a more complete physical boundary. A securely mounted gate can divide a doorway or hallway while allowing visibility and convenient access. An exercise pen or play yard can work when a separate room is unavailable, but its construction and escape resistance vary. Select a setup based on the puppies’ ability to climb or squeeze out, the resident dog’s access, and the room layout—not just convenience. VCA advises choosing a gate the dog cannot easily scale and fastening it to a solid surface; it also describes pens and play yards as containment options (VCA confinement guidance).
Puppy-proof the area and keep it comfortable
Block access to hazards and secure food, trash, doors, and windows. Provide washable bedding, separate food and water bowls, and age-appropriate toys. An appropriately sized crate can be part of the setup if a puppy is comfortable using it, but it is not a substitute for room to move, daily interaction, or exercise. VCA warns that extended confinement is unhealthy (VCA puppy-proofing guidance; VCA confinement guidance).

How do you introduce the puppies to your resident dog?
Ask the shelter or rescue whether a dog-to-dog meet-and-greet is appropriate before placement; ASPCA says it often arranges meet-and-greets for dog fosters (ASPCA foster guidance). Plan introductions around the dogs’ health, activity levels, and personalities. Do not simply let a puppy loose in the resident dog’s established territory.
- Start in a neutral place when appropriate. Keep both dogs controlled, such as on leash, and give them space to notice one another without forcing a greeting. VCA recommends a neutral location and controlled leash walks for an initial meeting (VCA puppy-preparation guidance).
- Move to brief, supervised sessions. Let the dogs approach or disengage at their own pace. Reward calm behavior and allow them to ignore one another. Watch for distress or anxiety, and end the session if either dog is struggling. VCA recommends short initial sessions and taking each dog to its own safe zone afterward so the puppy can settle (VCA dog-introduction guidance; VCA puppy-preparation guidance).
- Increase access only while you can supervise. Gradual exposure through a barrier can help the dogs get used to one another without unrestricted contact. Separate them whenever no capable adult can monitor them, including at bedtime at first. VCA’s foster guidance recommends separate territories, barrier-based gradual exposure, supervision during the first few weeks, and separation when caregivers are away; that is a precaution, not a deadline that makes unsupervised contact automatically safe (VCA foster guidance).
If either dog shows persistent fear, escalating aggression, or cannot settle, separate them and ask the foster coordinator or a qualified veterinary behavior professional for guidance. Do not punish warning signals such as growling: VCA cautions that punishing communication can suppress the warning without improving the relationship (VCA dog-introduction guidance).

How do you prevent conflict over food, toys, and rest?
Give each dog separate feeding and resting places, and keep chews and valued toys apart. Feed in separate rooms so neither dog can approach the other’s bowl. Use separate toys during introductions, and keep sleeping arrangements separate initially. Competition over resources can cause conflict, even when dogs appear comfortable together at other times. VCA recommends separate feeding areas, toys, and sleeping arrangements during introductions (VCA puppy-preparation guidance; VCA dog-introduction guidance).

Check that the resident dog is current on vaccinations, as ASPCA advises for foster households with existing pets. Ask the rescue for its written protocol and your veterinarian for instructions based on the puppies’ vaccination status, symptoms, exposure, and test history (ASPCA foster guidance).

Parvovirus and distemper precautions include vaccination, hygiene, and caution around places where puppies congregate until the initial vaccine series is complete. A baby gate controls access between household areas; it does not by itself provide disease isolation. Follow the veterinarian’s guidance on separation and cleaning.
