That gives each cat options and helps prevent one cat from blocking access to a single resource. Veterinary guidance supports multiple locations, but it does not establish a universal rule of one scratching post per cat.
How many scratching posts should a multi-cat home have?
There is no evidence-based, universal post-per-cat formula. AAFP/ISFM environmental-needs guidance recommends making scratching areas available in multiple locations, so cats can access resources separately or choose among them. The 2024 AAFP intercat-tension guidelines also recommend distributing scratching surfaces through cats’ territories. Neither specifies an exact number of posts. Singapore’s AVS recommends an “n+1” approach for essential items such as litter boxes, food and water bowls, and resting areas, but does not explicitly apply that count to scratching posts. Don’t assume a formula intended for other resources automatically determines the right number of scratchers. Start with several separate options, then add or move surfaces if a cat cannot reach one comfortably or consistently chooses another spot. Singapore AVS cat-care guidance.
Why cats need appropriate places to scratch
Scratching is normal behavior, not something to eliminate. The ASPCA advises teaching cats “where and what to scratch” rather than trying to stop them from scratching. Providing suitable surfaces lets cats carry out that behavior while giving you a practical way to redirect scratching away from furniture. ASPCA, “Destructive Scratching”.

In a multi-cat home, distributing those surfaces matters as much as having more than one. If every option sits together in one corner, cats still have to share the same location. Separate placements give them alternatives and support individual access.
Choose surfaces for your cats, not just your décor
Cats can differ in both the texture and orientation they prefer. Offer a mix where practical, observe what each cat actually uses, and expand the successful options rather than assuming a single style will suit everyone. 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines; ASPCA guidance.

- Orientations: Include vertical, horizontal, or slanted surfaces, depending on the space and your cats’ habits.
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines summarize study findings in which rope was used most often when offered, even though carpet was offered more commonly. That is a study-specific observation, not a guarantee that every cat will prefer rope. The guidelines also note that preferences can vary with age. 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines.

Make vertical options stable and stretch-friendly
If a cat scratches upright, choose a post that stays steady under pressure and is tall enough for a full stretch. A wobbly or collapsing post is less suitable than a stable one. The AAHA/AAFP guidelines report that, in a summarized study, cats scratched their preferred substrate more often on a simple upright post or a cat tree with at least two levels when the structure was at least 3 feet high. Treat that as a study finding—not a universal minimum height or a promise of success for every cat. 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines.

Where to put scratching surfaces
Place options in separate parts of the home rather than clustering them together. Useful locations include areas near resting places and high-traffic pathways, as recommended by the AAHA/AAFP guidelines. If a cat already scratches a piece of furniture, put an appropriate alternative close to that spot so the preferred behavior has an acceptable nearby outlet. AAHA/AAFP guidelines; ASPCA guidance.
Think about access from each cat’s usual territory and routine. A surface that is technically in the home but difficult for a cat to reach or use is not a useful option for that cat. Singapore AVS likewise advises spreading ample resources around the home in multi-cat households. Singapore AVS cat-care guidance.

Adjust the setup by watching what happens
- Offer variety. Set out more than one surface in separate locations, with different materials or orientations where possible.
- Notice each cat’s choices. Pay attention to which surfaces and locations each cat uses, and whether any option seems inaccessible or goes unused.
- Build on preferences. Add another surface of a type a cat uses, or move a suitable alternative near furniture that is being scratched.
- Reassess access. If one cat controls or blocks a location, provide an option elsewhere rather than relying on the contested spot.
Extra scratching surfaces alone should not be treated as a guaranteed fix for furniture damage or tension between cats. Preferences vary, and intercat tension can have multiple causes. If conflict or unwanted scratching continues, consider the wider environment and seek veterinary or qualified behavior guidance as appropriate. AAHA/AAFP guidelines; 2024 AAFP intercat-tension guidelines.
