The most useful way to tell whether a hamster is male or female is to compare the anogenital distance—the space between the anus and genital area. It is generally longer in males and shorter in females, while visible testicles can support a male identification but may retract. If the features are unclear, stop the examination and ask a veterinarian to confirm.
Examine your hamster safely
- Approach gently. Hamsters are mainly nocturnal, and startling one while it sleeps can lead to a bite. Make your presence known before touching it, and avoid waking or startling it.
- Let the hamster settle. Use a gentle palming hold. The University of Bristol’s veterinary clinical-skills guide describes placing the hamster in one hand facing you, covering it with the other, and turning it over to view the underside.
- Keep the inspection brief. Do not force a prolonged examination. Stop if the hamster struggles or you cannot view the area safely.
- Compare the openings. Look near the base of the tail and compare the distance between the anus and genital area.
- Ask a veterinarian if uncertain. If the features are obscured, the hamster is very young, or the signs disagree, do not keep manipulating it for a clearer view.
How to tell a male hamster from a female hamster
The primary clue is the anogenital distance. Veterinary teaching materials describe a longer distance in males and a shorter distance in females.

If the distance is difficult to judge, describe the result as uncertain rather than treating a poor view as a definite identification.
Why other signs can mislead
Testicles can retract, so a male hamster may not have visible testicles during an examination. Nipples may be apparent only in very young or lactating females, according to the University of Bristol veterinary clinical-skills guide; their absence does not prove a hamster is male.

The vaginal opening can also be hard to see in young or heavy animals. Scent-gland locations vary by species, and the reviewed sources do not establish gland appearance as a reliable standalone sexing method. Body shape, including a rounded rear, is not as useful as comparing the anogenital distance.
When to ask a veterinarian
Ask a veterinarian, preferably one comfortable examining small mammals, to confirm the sex if the openings are obscured, your hamster is very young, or the signs do not agree. Avoid repeated handling or pressing and manipulating the hamster to try to expose the anatomy.

How can you tell if a hamster is a boy or a girl?
Compare the distance between the anus and genital area near the base of the tail. A longer gap generally supports male, while a shorter gap generally supports female. If you cannot see the features clearly, ask a veterinarian to confirm.
What if my hamster has no visible testicles?
