Before sharing a wildlife photo, remove location data from the copy you plan to post, check the image and caption for clues, and avoid publishing an exact location for sensitive wildlife. A platform’s privacy setting can help, but it cannot hide a landmark in the frame or a place name in your text.
How wildlife photos can reveal a location
A location can escape through more than a map pin. A photo file may contain GPS coordinates in its EXIF metadata; the image may show a recognizable trail, building, or landscape; and a caption, comment, or related update may identify the place. Check each channel separately rather than assuming that hiding a post’s map location protects the whole image.
Location details can put wildlife at risk when they make an animal, nest, den, or sensitive site easier to find. Panthera cautions that a photo or video of a wild cat can act as a roadmap for a poacher (Panthera’s guidance on sharing wild-cat images). Disturbance and overcrowding can also be concerns, particularly around breeding and nesting seasons, according to Alberta’s wildlife-photography guidance.
Check the photo and its surrounding details before posting
- Prevent or remove GPS data. When practical, prevent location capture for the image or remove GPS metadata from the copy intended for sharing. Exact controls vary by device, operating-system version, and app, so check the current settings for the equipment and service you use. Audubon explains the location-data risk in its guidance on sharing bird photos; the Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy’s resources also advise attention to location information.
- Inspect what is visible. Look for distinctive landmarks, signs, trail names, buildings, or other clues that could identify the site. If necessary, choose another frame or crop out revealing details, while making sure the edit does not leave the clue visible elsewhere in the image.
- Review every accompanying text field. Remove precise place names, coordinates, and identifying details from the caption, comments, observation notes, and related updates. A vague caption does not protect an image that still carries GPS data, and hidden coordinates do not protect a caption that gives the site away.
- Consider timing. For a live sighting of sensitive wildlife, wait to post until sharing the location is less likely to lead someone to the animal or site. Panthera suggests waiting a few days before posting wild-cat images, but that is not a universal interval: appropriate timing depends on the species, circumstances, and local risk.
Choose a sharing method that matches the risk
There is no single privacy control that covers every way a location can be disclosed. Consider how precise the location would remain, what the platform protects, how sensitive the animal or site is in that place and season, and who needs access to the information.

| Sharing method | What it can protect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Public photo or social post | You can reduce clues by removing GPS metadata and editing the image and text before posting. | Do not assume a private account or platform setting removes location details embedded in the file or visible in the image. |
| Community-science observation with obscured or private coordinates | On iNaturalist, location settings can limit how precisely coordinates are shown publicly. | Review the observation’s location setting and separately check the photo and description for clues. |
| Private sharing with a trusted researcher or conservation contact | Can allow a legitimate recipient to receive precise information without posting it publicly. | Share exact coordinates only when appropriate, with a trusted person or project, and use a private channel rather than public notes or comments. |
What iNaturalist’s location settings mean
iNaturalist offers open, obscured, and private location settings. Its help page on obscured coordinates says that an obscured public point is selected at random within a 0.2-by-0.2-degree rectangle containing the true location—an area of about 500 square kilometers at the equator. The displayed area is approximate and varies with latitude because the dimensions of a degree of longitude change.
With a private location, coordinates are not publicly shown. iNaturalist may also automatically obscure or make observations private for taxa considered threatened by location disclosure; the platform describes those protections in its geoprivacy guidance. Check the setting on the observation rather than assuming every record receives the same treatment.

These controls apply to the platform’s location record, not to every clue in a post. A landmark, place name, or GPS data in an image can still disclose more than the map setting does. For a legitimate need to share hidden coordinates, iNaturalist describes direct messages or granting a trusted project access as selective options. It advises against putting coordinates in public comments or observation notes; see its instructions for sharing hidden coordinates.
A camera-trap example: Wildlife Insights
For sensitive-species deployments, Wildlife Insights says public downloads truncate coordinates to 0.1 decimal degree, approximately 11 km, hide location names, and randomize deployment IDs. This describes Wildlife Insights’ handling of public downloads; it should not be assumed to apply to other photo-sharing or social platforms. See the Wildlife Insights FAQ.

- 52x Optical Zoom Camera: Reach distant subjects with a 24mm wide angle lens spanning sweeping landscapes to tight telephoto shots of birds, wildlife, and athletes; genuine optical sharpness, not a digital crop
- 6fps Burst Mode: Catch the decisive moment in fast action; 6fps shooting captures rapid sequences of wildlife and sports, then review on the 3in LCD and keep the sharpest frame
- 16MP BSI CMOS Sensor: Sharp, detailed images with better low-light performance; built-in OIS counters hand movement even at full 52x reach, so handheld telephoto shots stay crisp without a tripod
- Built-in Wi-Fi: Share straight from the field; connect to your phone or tablet to transfer photos and post immediately, or use the phone as a live remote viewfinder; 1080p Full HD video records smooth sequences
- Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery: Power extended sessions in the field; accepts Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 1.5TB for thousands of photos and hours of Full HD video across a full day of shooting
When the location risk is unclear
Sensitivity depends on the species, the site, and the situation; a location that is safe to share in one context may be risky in another. If you are unsure, withhold precise details and ask a relevant local conservation authority for guidance. A private social account may narrow the audience, but it does not remove clues from a file shared with its viewers.
