Introduce children and other animals gradually, reward calm behavior, and supervise every interaction. Because this breed was developed to kill rats, keep rabbits, rodents, birds, and other small pets securely separated rather than assuming socialization makes direct access safe.
Are Prague Ratters good with children?
The FCI breed standard describes the Pražský krysařík as “gentle, curious and affectionate,” slightly reserved toward strangers but “very friendly in the family.” That is a description of the breed, not a promise about any individual dog. The Prague Ratter Club of America says the breed “love[s] children and do[es] extremely well in a family environment,” but a child and dog still need to be a good match.
These dogs are very small, so rough handling, grabbing, or being chased can frighten or injure them. Teach children to use quiet voices, let the dog approach on its own, and leave it undisturbed while it eats, sleeps, or rests. An adult must stay close enough to intervene; children should not be responsible for supervising the dog.
How to introduce a Prague Ratter to children
- Ask what the dog already knows. Before bringing a puppy or rescue dog home, ask the breeder or rescue what experiences it has had with children and how it responded.
- Choose a calm first meeting. Give the dog room to retreat and let it decide whether to approach. Keep the child quiet and still rather than inviting a crowd around the dog.
- Keep the first contact brief. Pair a manageable interaction with a treat, play, or another reward the dog enjoys. End while the dog is still comfortable.
- Watch the dog, not just the child. If the dog freezes, hides, repeatedly tries to leave, or cannot settle, increase distance or end the session. Do not force contact or keep exposing it in the hope that it will simply get used to the situation.
- Build familiarity gradually. Repeat short, positive meetings and increase interaction only while the dog remains relaxed and can retreat.
The EU Platform on Animal Welfare advises tailoring puppy socialization to the individual puppy, planning introductions carefully, and allowing the puppy to interact at its own pace. It warns that puppies can be overwhelmed when exposed to too many things too quickly.

How to introduce a Prague Ratter to another dog
Consider both dogs’ temperament and health before arranging a meeting. A resident dog’s behavior around puppies matters, as does whether either dog has a history that could make an introduction unsafe. Start with distance or a barrier, such as a baby gate or exercise pen, if you are unsure how the resident dog will respond. These barriers are management aids, not substitutes for adult supervision.
- Choose a controlled setting. Use a space where you can keep the dogs apart and where the Prague Ratter can retreat.
- Begin with distance or a barrier. Allow the dogs to notice one another without requiring close contact. Reward relaxed behavior.
- Increase access only if both dogs remain comfortable. Keep the interaction supervised, and do not rush from a calm barrier introduction to unrestricted access.
- Separate them if the meeting is not going well. Fear, avoidance, stiffness, escalating arousal, or aggression are reasons to calmly create distance. Try again later with more space, or seek qualified help. Keep the dogs apart if the resident dog is not accepting of the puppy.
For a puppy, ask your veterinarian about local infection risks and vaccination timing before arranging contact with unfamiliar dogs or encounters in public. AKC guidance supports controlled meetings with known pets, while advising owners to avoid unknown dogs and dog parks until the puppy is fully vaccinated and has veterinary clearance. Veterinarians may differ on puppy classes depending on screening and sanitation, so ask about options in your area.

How to introduce a Prague Ratter to a cat
The reviewed breed sources do not set out a Prague Ratter-specific cat introduction protocol. A cautious approach follows gradual socialization principles and takes the breed’s ratting background into account:
- Use a secure barrier at first, and make sure the cat has a route to escape or reach a dog-free space.
- Keep early sessions brief and supervised. Let the cat choose whether to approach.
- Reward calm behavior and interrupt attempts to chase. Do not treat chasing as play.
- Keep the animals separated whenever an adult cannot actively supervise.
Move to closer contact only while both animals remain comfortable. A cat’s ability to retreat matters as much as the dog’s response.

Can a Prague Ratter live with rabbits, rodents, birds, or other small pets?
Do not assume socialization makes direct access safe. The FCI standard says the breed’s small size, quick movement, and keen sense of smell historically suited it to killing rats. Dogs NSW also cautions that Prague Ratters have a strong prey instinct and may be a poor choice for a household with many small pets.
Use secure physical separation for rabbits, rodents, birds, and other small prey animals. Do not leave them accessible to the dog, even if the animals have seen each other before or the dog appears calm. If you already keep several small pets, consider carefully whether you can maintain reliable separation in your home.

How to choose a safe pace and training approach
Use reward-based training, which Dogs NSW recommends for this breed. For any introduction, judge the next step by whether you can maintain safe distance, the dog remains relaxed and can retreat, and the resident animal’s size, temperament, and relationship to the dog’s prey drive. For dog-to-dog contact, also account for local vaccination and infection risks.
There is no introduction schedule or distance validated specifically for Prague Ratters in the cited guidance. Keep sessions short, reward calm behavior, and stop or add distance if either animal becomes uncomfortable. Ask a qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behavior professional for help if fear or aggression persists, a resident adult dog has a concerning history, or you cannot safely separate the animals.
