A removable, hardwood-compatible grip layer beneath the dog bed is the most direct fix. First clean the bed’s underside and the floor; then, if it still slides, choose a pad that suits your floor’s finish and covers the bed’s contact area.
1. Clean the bed base and floor
Turn the bed over and remove lint, hair, and dust from its underside. Clean the floor beneath it, too, and let both surfaces dry before putting the bed back. Debris can interfere with contact between the bed and floor, so this simple check is worth trying before buying anything.
2. Choose a removable grip layer
Measure the flat portion of the bed that rests on the floor. Choose a removable underlay that supports that footprint without extending into a walkway, where an exposed edge could catch a foot.
Bona’s homeowner guidance, “Best Rug Pads for Wood Floors”, recommends felt or natural-rubber pads for hardwood. Natural rubber adds grip; felt can cushion but may provide less traction by itself. A felt-and-rubber combination may offer both qualities. Bona’s advice is general guidance for rugs, not a guarantee that every pad is compatible with every bed or wood-floor finish.

Before using a pad, check the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions. Bona warns that some inexpensive pads, including PVC or plastic products, may stain or adhere to wood finishes. Avoid permanent adhesive on finished wood unless the floor maker confirms it is suitable. Lift the bed and pad from time to time to check for trapped grit, residue, discoloration, or changes to the finish.
3. Consider alternatives for your setup
- Rubberized liner: A removable liner may add friction, but its compatibility with your particular floor finish is not established; check the flooring maker’s guidance first.
- Furniture grippers: Discrete grippers may work under the bed’s feet or corners. Check that they stay in place and do not damage the finish.
- A rug already in the room: This can give the bed a more textured surface, but make sure the rug itself is anchored. If it moves, the bed may simply carry it along.
- A bed with a grippy base: Replacing a bed with one designed to stay put is another option, though individual products’ performance and floor compatibility vary.
These are alternatives, not a tested ranking. The most directly supported purchase category is a removable rug pad made with natural rubber or felt and rubber, subject to your floor’s care guidance.

4. Check the result and adjust
After putting the bed back, watch what happens when your dog climbs in, turns, and gets up. If the bed still shifts, check that the underlay covers the part of the base that contacts the floor and that neither the pad nor any rug beneath it moves independently. Recheck the floor under the setup for grit or signs of finish change.
