Keep your dog out of the barn or feeding area while horses are being fed, and store hay, feed, supplements, and horse medications where the dog cannot reach them. If your dog has already eaten feed—especially feed that may contain medication—call your veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison-control service for advice tailored to the product and your dog.
Prevent access during horse feeding
Keep your dog out of the barn, feed room, stall, or other area while you prepare and serve horse feed. A closed door or other physical barrier can prevent access during the moment when feed is most exposed; choose an approach that works with your layout and that you can maintain consistently. FDA warns that pets have accessed horse medications left in barns or placed in feed, so keep the dog away from both the preparation area and the horse’s feeding space.
Do not rely on a dog simply ignoring feed or medication. As FDA veterinarian Stacey Shults puts it, “You may not think that bottle of medication on your kitchen counter is something that your dog would want to eat, but think again.”
Secure hay, feed, supplements, and medications between feedings
Put horse feed and medications in a secure place the dog cannot access. A lockable feed-storage container may help, but its suitability depends on the closure, placement, capacity, and your dog’s behavior. No specific container type or model is certified as dog-proof by the sources cited here.

- Keep medication-containing feed and horse medicines inaccessible to pets; do not leave them unattended where a dog can reach them.
- Retain the original packaging and product details. FDA recommends keeping information such as the product name, manufacturer, lot number, UPC, and best-by date, which can also help a veterinarian identify what the dog may have reached.
- Supervise your dog around horse feeding, and remove leftover feed from any area the dog can access.
Understand what your dog may have reached
“Horse feed” is not one uniform product. It may include forage, grains, commercial concentrates, and supplements with different ingredients and purposes. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes grass hays such as timothy, brome, Bermuda, orchard grass, and teff, as well as legume hay such as alfalfa. Concentrates include grains and commercial grain-based feeds; they are not interchangeable, and products may contain additional ingredients.
Merck’s feeding guidance is for horses, not dogs. For example, its recommendation that horses receive no more than 0.5% of body weight in grain-based concentrates at one feeding—and its example of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) for a 500-kg (1,100-lb) horse—does not establish a safe or harmful amount for a dog. The available sources do not establish a dog-specific safe dose or outcome statistic for ordinary horse hay or feed. For the horse-feeding information, see the Merck Veterinary Manual guidance on feeding practices in horses and other equids.

- Identify the product. Check the package or label and note whether it contained a supplement or medication. Keep the packaging available.
- Estimate the exposure. Be ready to tell the veterinary professional how much may be missing and when your dog could have eaten it.
- Call for case-specific advice. Contact your dog’s veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison-control service. FDA directs owners to veterinary or poison-control help for emergencies; the ASPCA horse-care page also provides poison-control information. Verify current contact details, fees, and availability when seeking help.
Do not induce vomiting, give home remedies, or decide to wait for symptoms without veterinary direction. The sources cited here do not provide a dog-specific treatment protocol for ordinary hay or feed ingestion.
Treat possible medication exposure as urgent
If the feed may have contained horse medication, tell the veterinary professional immediately and provide the product name if you can. FDA has reported dogs and cats accessing horse medicines in feed or barns. A University of Florida case report describes a dog treated for ivermectin toxicity after getting horse dewormer. The report explains that the dog consumed a powerful dose intended for a horse and had a genetic sensitivity to ivermectin; it is an individual case, not a prediction of what will happen to every dog. Read the University of Florida account of the ivermectin exposure.
