Keep your dog away from the tomato bed now, then teach a reliable “leave it” cue with gradual, reward-based practice. The risk depends on what the dog eats: ASPCA lists tomato plants as toxic to dogs but says ripe tomato fruit is non-toxic. Leaves, stems, and green tomatoes warrant a call to your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service if eaten.
First, know which part of the tomato plant is risky
A tomato vine and its fruit are not equivalent. The ASPCA’s tomato-plant listing identifies the plant as toxic to dogs and says ripe fruit is non-toxic. Its garden-safety guidance explains that the plant and small green tomatoes contain tomatine, and that levels decrease as the fruit ripens. It describes ripe tomatoes as suitable for an occasional treat in moderation—not as food to eat freely.

If your dog has eaten leaves, stems, or unripe fruit, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for advice about that dog and that ingestion. The cited guidance does not establish a safe dose threshold, so do not try to calculate safety from the amount alone.

Block access to the garden immediately
Preventing another chance to grab a tomato is the first step; practice of the behavior makes it harder to manage while you train an alternative. ASPCA suggests using a low fence to keep pets out of a garden. Choose and secure a barrier to suit your yard and dog rather than relying on a particular height to contain every dog.

- Keep your dog out of the growing area when you cannot supervise. Close a gate or use a suitable pet barrier around the bed.
- When you are in the garden together, watch closely and use a leash if needed to prevent your dog from reaching the vine.
- Store pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, and compost where your dog cannot get to them; ASPCA also identifies these as potential garden hazards for pets.
Management is not a substitute for training: it keeps the dog safe and prevents opportunities to grab tomatoes while you teach a different response. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) describes environmental management as avoiding situations that prompt unwanted behavior and ensuring safety.
Teach “leave it” in small, controlled steps
Start away from the tomato bed, where your dog can succeed without competing with an appealing, reachable vine. The American Kennel Club’s “leave it” training guide uses a gradual progression: reward the dog for disengaging from a low-value treat, then build toward more realistic distractions.

- Begin with a treat under your hand. Let your dog notice a low-value treat covered by your hand. When the dog stops trying to get it, mark that moment with a word such as “yes” and give a better treat from your other hand.
- Make the exercise slightly harder. Progress to an uncovered treat while still rewarding disengagement with a separate, better treat. Do not let the dog take the practice treat.
- Add leash-controlled practice. Put a treat on the floor and use a leash to prevent your dog from reaching it. Reward the dog for turning away or otherwise leaving it alone.
- Add the cue and everyday distractions. Once your dog reliably ignores the food, say “leave it” and reward the response. Increase difficulty and distractions gradually, and practice in different places.
- Work toward the garden without giving access. With the dog leashed and the vine physically out of reach, reward disengaging from the plants. Keep the garden barrier in place; training does not make unsupervised access a safe test.
If your dog cannot respond, make the exercise easier by increasing distance or reducing the distraction. Repeating a cue the dog cannot follow does not solve the problem. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods for all dog training and advises against aversive methods, so do not use frightening deterrents or punishment to keep your dog away.
