Stop attention-seeking jumps by making calm greetings pay off. Choose a sit or four-paws-down rule, reward it promptly, and keep visitors consistent.

When your dog jumps for attention, calmly remove the attention and reward a specific greeting you do want—such as sitting or keeping all four paws on the floor. Be consistent: if jumping sometimes earns talking, touching, or play, it can keep paying off. While your dog learns, use a leash or gate to prevent uncontrolled greetings, and ask visitors to follow the same rule.

Why dogs keep jumping for attention

Jumping can work because people respond. Talking to, touching, or even pushing a dog away is still interaction, so the dog may get the attention it was seeking. A reaction meant to stop the behavior can therefore keep it going or make the greeting more exciting.

Instead of only telling your dog what not to do, teach a clear alternative and make that behavior the reliable way to get attention. Choose a greeting your dog can succeed with

Greeting rule What it looks like Useful when
Sit Your dog sits before receiving attention. You want a specific, easy-to-recognize cue and can prompt it before greetings.
Four paws on the floor Your dog may stand, but keeps all four feet down. You want to allow a standing greeting rather than require a sit.

Choose one rule and use it consistently. The best option is the one your dog can manage when excited and that everyone in the household and visiting guests can recognize and follow.

Train the new greeting step by step

  1. Begin with a calm, manageable greeting. Ask for a sit as you enter or before a cooperative person approaches. If your rule is four paws down, be ready to reward your dog while it is standing with all feet on the floor.
  2. Reward the greeting promptly. As soon as your dog follows the rule, offer calm praise, petting, or a small treat. Timely reinforcement helps make clear which behavior earned attention.
  3. If your dog jumps, briefly disengage. Calmly turn away or step back. Avoid talking, eye contact, pushing, grabbing, or turning the moment into a game.
  4. Return attention when the dog does the right thing. As soon as your dog returns to the chosen greeting—sitting or standing with all paws down—resume calm attention and reward it.
  5. Practice with familiar people. Repeat the routine with household members and cooperative visitors so your dog gets practice succeeding under manageable conditions.
  6. Gradually reduce food rewards as your dog improves. Keep appropriate greetings worthwhile with attention and praise, even when you use treats less often.

Make greetings with visitors manageable

Until your dog can greet people calmly, prevent a rush to the door or an uncontrolled approach. A leash, pet gate, crate, or designated place can help manage access while you set up a greeting your dog can handle. A gate prevents repeated jumping practice; it does not teach the greeting by itself.

Give visitors one simple instruction: ignore jumping, then reward the agreed greeting when your dog offers it. If your dog cannot stay calm, keep a barrier or leash in place rather than asking guests to manage a difficult greeting. Outdoors, avoid greetings with strangers until your dog can succeed with familiar, cooperative people; redirect your dog’s attention as needed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Allowing jumping sometimes. Mixed rules make it harder for your dog to learn what earns attention. Ask everyone who greets the dog to follow the same rule.
  • Pushing, grabbing paws, or kneeing. These actions can still feel like attention or interaction, may intensify the greeting, and can cause injury.
  • Ignoring jumping without rewarding an alternative. Pausing attention alone does not show your dog what to do instead. Promptly reward the chosen greeting when it appears.

When jumping may need individual help

This approach addresses ordinary greeting behavior; jumping by itself does not establish why a particular dog is doing it. If the situation involves a safety concern or other troubling behavior, seek case-specific advice from a qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary professional rather than assuming the cause from jumping alone.
