Teach your Golden Retriever that a loose leash—not pulling—is what keeps the walk moving. Start in a quiet place, reward the dog for staying near you, and stop whenever the leash goes tight. Resume when it slackens and your dog checks back. A front-clip harness can help you manage pulling during practice, but it does not teach polite walking by itself.
Why does my Golden Retriever pull?
The training guidance available for leash pulling is general dog-training advice; it does not establish that Golden Retrievers need a different method. Pulling can keep getting reinforced when it takes the dog toward something interesting. The practical lesson is to make pulling stop forward progress and make walking on a slack leash worthwhile.
How to teach loose-leash walking
1. Start somewhere quiet
Choose a low-distraction place where your dog can pay attention to you. Use a comfortable, standard leash; the American Kennel Club (AKC) suggests a lightweight six-foot leash for leash training. Keep early practice easy rather than beginning in a busy, exciting setting.
2. Reward the position and behavior you want
Give small treats or praise when your dog walks near you, looks back to check in, or keeps the leash slack. You can also use an appropriate chance to sniff as a reward for polite walking. A clicker is optional: it can mark the moment your dog does the behavior you want to reinforce.

3. Stop when the leash tightens
As soon as the leash goes tight, stop walking. Wait for your dog to create slack and check back, then praise or reward and continue. Avoid moving forward while your dog is pulling: that can teach that tension on the leash gets the dog where it wants to go. Consistency matters, including when other people walk your dog.
4. Increase distractions gradually
Once your dog can walk with a loose leash in a quiet place, practice in more interesting surroundings. Reward short stretches of good walking and offer sniff breaks as enrichment. If your dog cannot focus in a new setting, make the exercise easier by returning to a quieter place or adding distance from distractions.

How can everyone keep the training consistent?
Ask every person who walks your dog to follow the same rule: stop when the leash tightens, then resume when it slackens and the dog checks in. Keep suitable small treats handy, and use praise or sniffing opportunities as additional rewards. Mixed responses—sometimes stopping, sometimes letting pulling work—make the lesson harder to learn.
