Start in a quiet place, reward the dog for staying near you, and stop whenever the leash tightens. Resume when it slackens, then build up distance and distractions gradually. These are general loose-leash training steps: a Pitsky label alone does not establish a particular temperament or training need, so adjust the pace and rewards to your individual dog.
Why pulling continues
Pulling can get a dog to a smell, person, or destination faster, which can reinforce the behavior. If a tight leash sometimes still leads forward, the dog may keep trying it. The American Humane Society describes leash pulling as common and improvable with consistent loose-leash training in its walking guidance.

How to teach loose-leash walking
Begin somewhere easy
Practice indoors, in a yard, or in another quiet spot where your dog can notice you and accept rewards. Keep sessions brief and finish while your dog is still engaged. The American Humane Society recommends short sessions and check-ins in its March 24, 2025 walking tips.
Reward the behavior you want
Mark and reward your dog when it walks near you on a relaxed leash or looks back while the leash is slack. Begin with just a few steps, then gradually reward longer stretches. Small training treats can be useful if they suit your dog’s diet; praise or another reward your dog values may also work.

Stop when the leash tightens
When your dog pulls and the leash goes taut, stop moving. Wait for slack, then continue and reward the loose-leash behavior. Do not drag or yank your dog back. This stop-and-resume pattern removes the forward progress that pulling may have earned.
Use sniffing and access as rewards
If your dog wants to investigate a smell or approach something, move toward it while the leash is loose. Pause if it tightens; continue when slack returns. In this way, access to the environment can reward the walking behavior you want.

Add difficulty in small steps
When your dog can succeed in a quiet place, gradually practice for longer and introduce more distractions. If your dog cannot respond to you or take rewards, make the task easier: increase distance from the distraction or return to a quieter area. The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine outlines reward-based practice and gradual increases in distraction in its loose-leash walking guidance.

Keep the rule consistent
Everyone walking your dog should follow the same stop-when-taut, resume-when-slack rule. Inconsistent handling can let pulling work some of the time, making it harder for the dog to learn what earns forward movement.

Choose equipment for fit, comfort, and control
A properly fitted harness can distribute pressure across the chest instead of the neck. UC Davis describes a front chest attachment as one option that may decrease pulling, while noting that some dogs continue to pull. A front-clip harness is a management aid, not a substitute for training or a guaranteed solution.
Compare equipment by checking how comfortably it fits, whether it rubs or restricts movement, where the leash attaches, how much control the handler needs, and how the dog responds. Use a leash and setup that let you guide the dog safely and comfortably. Avoid relying on retractable leashes where you need close control; the American Humane Society discusses leash and equipment choices in its walking guidance.

Use reward-based methods, not leash corrections
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based training and says aversive methods—including prong collars, choke chains, electronic collars, and leash corrections—should not be used. These methods are not a safe shortcut for teaching loose-leash walking. If a walk is unsafe, create distance from the trigger and get qualified help rather than escalating force.
When to seek professional help
Ask your veterinarian for guidance if pulling is connected to fear, anxiety, or aggression, or if you cannot safely control your dog. A qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behaviorist can help assess the individual dog and build a safer plan. UC Davis also advises professional assessment when fear, anxiety, or aggression is involved.
