Keep your puppy out of the driver’s lap by securing them in the back seat before the car moves. Use a properly fitted vehicle harness attached as its manufacturer directs, or a ventilated crate or carrier secured against shifting. Then help your puppy get comfortable with the setup through short, reward-based practice while parked and brief drives.
Why your puppy needs to ride away from the driver
A puppy on your lap or moving freely through the cabin can distract you. In a collision, an unrestrained animal can be thrown; in the front seat, a puppy may also be seriously injured by an inflating airbag. The FDA warns that “unrestrained pets roaming around your car or sitting on your lap can be very distracting.” Make restraint part of getting ready to drive—not something to try after the puppy starts climbing.
For UK drivers, The Highway Code’s Rule 57 says animals should be suitably restrained so they cannot distract the driver or be injured if the vehicle stops quickly. That is UK guidance; check the rules where you drive, since legal requirements vary by jurisdiction.
Choose a secure back-seat setup

Choose a harness designed for vehicle restraint that fits your puppy, is compatible with your car, and attaches to the seat belt as its manufacturer directs. Check for credible, product-specific crash-testing information before relying on a claim that a particular model has been crash tested. Crate or carrier
A crate or carrier should be ventilated and large enough for your puppy to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around. Secure it so it cannot slide when the car moves or stops. This option may suit a puppy already comfortable resting in a crate; a crate that is loose in the vehicle is not a secure setup.
Teach your puppy to settle before you drive
- Introduce the equipment at home or in the parked car. Let your puppy approach and investigate the harness or crate without rushing to start a trip.
- Reward calm behavior. Use praise or small treats for approaching the setup and settling in it. Keep each session short and positive.
- Practice while parked. Help your puppy spend a little time in the restraint with the car stationary. Build duration gradually, stopping while the puppy is still managing comfortably.
- Add short drives. Once your puppy can settle while parked, try a very brief drive. Increase the time in small steps only while the puppy remains comfortable.
- Keep the driver focused on driving. During early practice, AKC recommends having another person drive so you can attend to the puppy. Do not handle or reposition a puppy while driving; pull over safely if you need to intervene.
What to do if your puppy becomes distressed
Do not make a longer trip a test of endurance. Return to an easier step, such as resting in the restraint while parked, and progress more slowly. Travel-related triggers can include entering the car, being restrained, engine noise, or the motion of the vehicle, so notice when the difficulty begins and adjust practice accordingly.

If your puppy continues to struggle or progress stalls, ask your veterinarian for advice or seek help from a qualified humane trainer or veterinary behaviorist. Discuss medication or calming aids with a veterinarian rather than trying them on your own.
