To stop furniture damage, redirect your cat’s scratching rather than trying to stop the behavior. Put a stable scratcher the cat likes right beside the targeted furniture, protect that surface temporarily, and keep the alternative available. Scratching is normal: cats use it to maintain their claws, stretch, and leave visual and scent signals. ASPCA guidance recommends teaching cats where to scratch, not preventing them from scratching.
Why cats scratch furniture
Scratching is not simply an attempt to damage your belongings. Cats scratch to remove worn outer claw sheaths, stretch their bodies, and leave visual and scent communication. The practical goal is to make an acceptable surface more appealing and convenient than the sofa or chair.
Choose a scratcher your cat will use
There is no universally preferred scratcher. Match its shape and texture to what your cat already scratches, and check that it stays put during use.
- Orientation: Offer a vertical post, a horizontal pad, or a slanted surface based on how your cat scratches.
- Texture: Possible surfaces include cardboard, sisal, wood, and upholstery. Observe which texture your cat seeks out.
- Stability: Choose a scratcher that does not wobble or slide when the cat leans into it.
- Size: A vertical post should allow a comfortable stretch. ASPCA general-care guidance recommends a post at least three feet high: ASPCA cat-care guidance.
A horizontal scratcher may suit a cat who prefers scratching along the floor. It may also be a more comfortable option if vertical scratching seems painful; International Cat Care advises offering a horizontal surface for cats who may experience pain on a tall vertical post: International Cat Care’s scratching guidance.

Redirect scratching with a nearby alternative
- Notice the pattern. Identify the furniture spot, the direction your cat scratches, and the surface texture. Use those observations to choose a matching scratcher.
- Put the scratcher beside the target. If the cat scratches a particular sofa corner, place the alternative next to that corner rather than across the room. Add scratchers in other places your cat regularly scratches.
- Make the new surface inviting. A useful location may encourage exploration. ASPCA also suggests using catnip or toys to attract a cat to a scratcher.
- Let the cat investigate voluntarily. Do not hold the cat and force its paws across the scratcher. ASPCA warns that this may frighten the cat and make it avoid the post.
Protect the furniture while your cat learns
Use a temporary barrier on the damaged area while keeping the acceptable scratcher close by. The Humane Society of the United States suggests a tight-fitting sheet for furniture and sticky tape for smaller surfaces: Humane Society furniture-scratching guidance. ASPCA also lists double-sided tape and other coverings as deterrents. Choose a cover or tape suited to the surface, and do not remove the nearby scratcher while the barrier is in place.
Keep claws comfortable without force
Regular trimming can reduce claw sharpness, but it is optional and should suit the cat’s tolerance. ASPCA advises clipping only the tip and asking a veterinarian or groomer for help if the cat will not tolerate trimming or you are unsure how to do it: ASPCA grooming guidance. Soft temporary claw caps are another management option, but they do not replace providing an appropriate scratching surface.
Why declawing is not a furniture solution
Declawing is not ordinary nail trimming: ASPCA describes it as amputation of the last digital bone, including the nail bed and claw, and notes risks such as pain and surgical complications. Its position statement lists nonsurgical alternatives including nail trims, appealing scratching structures, behavior modification, furniture deterrents, and soft temporary claw pads: ASPCA’s position on declawing cats. These options are not guaranteed to work identically for every cat, so use a combination suited to the individual animal.

If vertical scratching appears painful, offer a horizontal option and discuss the discomfort with a veterinarian.
