The safest way to stop dogs from guarding toys from each other is to prevent competition: put away toys that trigger tension when the dogs are together, and give each dog enrichment only behind a closed door or secure barrier. Watch for early warning signs and calmly separate the dogs. Do not force sharing, grab a guarded toy, or punish a growl. Training can help, but any bite risk or escalating aggression calls for professional guidance.
Why dogs guard toys from each other
Toy guarding is a form of resource guarding: a dog tries to keep another dog away from something it values. A dog may guard toys from another dog even if it is comfortable with people near its belongings. This behavior can range from hovering over an item to aggression, so treat early signs seriously.
Watch for stiffening, freezing, a hard stare, posturing, hovering over or blocking access to a toy, growling, snarling, snapping, or chasing. A growl is a warning, not a reason to punish the dog. Intervene before the interaction escalates.
Make toy access safe right away
- Put away trigger toys during shared time. Remove items that reliably cause tension whenever the dogs are together. Do not leave toys out to see whether they can work it out.
- Give toys and chews separately. Offer enrichment in separate rooms or behind a secure barrier, such as a sturdy gate or pen, where neither dog can reach the other.
- Pick up items after separation. Wait until the dogs are apart before collecting toys or chews. If you cannot separate them reliably, do not offer their trigger items while they are together.
- Supervise shared time. At the first sign of worry, calmly increase distance and use a barrier or call one dog away if you can do so safely. Do not reach between the dogs or try to take the item from a tense dog.
Merck Veterinary Manual states: “Environmental management aimed at avoidance is essential for safety and for the successful treatment of aggression between familiar dogs.” Management reduces opportunities for conflict, but it does not necessarily change how a dog feels about the toy, so keep separation and supervision in place.

What not to do
- Do not force the dogs to share toys or stage a test by letting one approach the other’s guarded item.
- Do not grab the toy, chase or corner the guarding dog, or put your hands between the dogs.
- Do not punish a growl or other warning. Confrontation and punishment can increase fear, anxiety, or aggression, and suppressing a warning does not make the underlying risk go away.
If the dogs are already tense, prioritize distance and a barrier rather than trying to resolve the dispute in the moment.
Can training help?
Reward-based training can teach a dog to voluntarily release an item or move away from it. This is separate from the immediate safety plan: practice with one dog at a time, not while the other dog is approaching or competing for the toy.

- Start with an easy, low-value item in a calm setting. Have a more rewarding treat or toy ready.
- Ask for a simple cue such as “drop” or “leave it,” or create a voluntary release by offering the better reward. Reward the dog for moving away from the item; avoid taking it by force.
- Build difficulty gradually, using more tempting items only when the dog remains relaxed and responds reliably.
- Stop if the dog stiffens, freezes, growls, snaps, or stops progressing. Do not push through those signs; get qualified help.
Keep the dogs physically separated during this learning unless a qualified professional has designed a safe behavior-modification plan. Training may improve the response, but it is not a reason to remove barriers or leave trigger toys out together before the situation is reliably safe.
When to contact a veterinarian or behavior professional
- Ask your veterinarian about a new or changing behavior. Pain or illness can affect behavior and may contribute to a sudden change in guarding.
- Seek qualified behavior support if there is bite risk. A bite, snapping, chasing, escalating guarding, or concern that a dog may bite warrants help from a board-certified veterinary behaviorist or another appropriately qualified professional experienced with aggression and resource guarding.
- Get help if separation is difficult to maintain. A safe plan must work consistently for everyone in the household. Until it does, keep trigger items unavailable when the dogs share space.
The ASPCA advises against attempting do-it-yourself treatment when a dog may bite. Professional guidance can help assess risk and plan behavior work without deliberately exposing either dog to danger.

Management and training solve different problems
| Approach | What it does | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental management | Removes trigger toys from shared spaces and uses doors, gates, or pens to separate the dogs. | Reduces immediate opportunities for guarding and conflict. It must be maintained reliably and does not by itself change the dog’s emotional response. |
| Behavior modification | Uses rewards to build relaxed behavior, voluntary release, or disengagement, with gradual progression. | Aims to improve the dog’s response. Progress must be paced carefully and may require a qualified professional. |
Choose a plan that creates reliable separation, lets both dogs relax and enjoy enrichment, and can be followed by every person in the household. The level of aggression and any bite history determine how urgently to involve a professional.
