How to Stop Your Dog Chasing Your Cat: Five Safety-First Steps

Prevent chasing, reintroduce your pets gradually, reward calm behavior, and recognize when professional help or permanent separation may be needed.

Stop unsupervised access first. Then reintroduce your dog and cat gradually, keeping the dog leashed and the cat free to retreat. Reward calm attention and turning away, and increase the challenge only while both animals remain settled. If the dog fixates, lunges, snaps, or cannot be redirected—or the cat shows ongoing stress—separate them and get qualified, reward-based behavior help. Some pairs may not be safe living together.

1. Prevent chasing when you cannot supervise

Use a closed door or pet gate to keep the animals apart whenever you cannot actively supervise them. Give the cat a permanent dog-free area with access to essentials and a way to retreat; elevated escape options can also help. A barrier is a management tool, not proof that the pets are safe together.

Do not let a chase-prone dog run loose outdoors. Chasing can be strongly motivated, so a verbal correction alone should not be expected to erase it. The aim is to prevent unsafe rehearsal and teach a different response. VCA’s guidance on chase behaviors explains why training an alternative matters.

2. Restart introductions at a low intensity

If chasing has happened, pause direct contact and return to separation. Start with scent exchange while the pets remain apart. Only move on when both are settled; the next stage can be seeing each other through a barrier, followed by a brief, controlled same-room session if they remain calm. American Humane Society advises pausing and returning to separation if either animal shows fear or aggression. Its introduction guide describes this gradual approach.

3. Keep early meetings controlled and brief

Keep the dog on leash during early visual and same-room meetings, and actively supervise. The cat must be able to retreat rather than being held in place or cornered. Choose a distance at which the dog can still respond to you. If either animal becomes fearful, agitated, or intensely focused, end the session or increase the distance instead of waiting for the behavior to escalate.

Do not rush the process to meet a calendar target. American Humane Society notes that some pairs may become comfortable within a few days, while others need several weeks or longer. Let the animals’ behavior and welfare—not a deadline—determine when to progress.

4. Reward the response you want

Practice a focus cue, sit or stay, “leave it,” or a turn-away cue away from the cat first. During controlled exposure, reward the dog for calm behavior, looking to you, or disengaging from the cat. Work at a distance where the dog can take the reward and respond; build duration and reduce distance in small steps, rather than making the situation harder all at once.

Use reward-based methods rather than punishment. VCA cautions that punishment can increase anxiety or fear around the trigger. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s current position statements page says it continues to stand behind its 2021 humane dog-training position and recommends reward-based methods for dog training, including behavior problems.

5. Get professional help when safety is uncertain

Return to separation and consult a qualified, reward-based trainer or animal behavior professional if the dog persistently fixates, lunges, snaps, cannot be redirected, or if you cannot maintain control. Seek help as well if the cat hides most of the time or stops normal eating or litter-box use. These are signs to protect the cat and reassess the plan, not reasons to force more contact.

When choosing help, look for relevant behavior experience, reward-based methods, appropriate credentials, and availability in your area. No approach can guarantee that every dog-cat pairing will become safe: a history of aggressive chasing or rough handling calls for particular caution, and some households may need permanent separation or a cat-free home for the dog.
