For a generally healthy Cane Corso, mix the new food into the old food gradually over about a week, watching stool, appetite, and behavior as you go. Slow down if digestive signs appear. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, a diagnosed condition, or a veterinarian-prescribed diet, ask your vet for an individualized transition plan; there is no Cane Corso-specific schedule established by the sources cited here.
Use a gradual transition, not an overnight swap
A sudden food change can upset digestion. The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2021 nutrition and weight-management guideline says, “Diet adjustments over a 4- to 7-day period may reduce the occurrence of negative gastrointestinal responses.” The American Kennel Club offers a seven-day example. Treat either as general guidance rather than a guarantee: dogs with sensitive digestion or a history of gastrointestinal problems may need a slower change.

Mix the portions into each meal. If stool becomes loose or your dog seems uncomfortable, pause or slow the increase rather than moving to the next ratio. The American Kennel Club’s example is published on its dog-food transition guide; the publication date is not stated on the reviewed page.
Choose food for your dog’s life stage and health
Look for a commercial food labeled complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage. The nutritional adequacy statement on the package identifies whether the food is intended to be complete and balanced for long-term feeding to a specified life stage, as explained by the American Animal Hospital Association. Age and health affect dietary needs, so “large breed,” “sensitive stomach,” or a particular protein is not automatically the right choice for every Cane Corso.

If your veterinarian prescribed the new food, follow their transition instructions rather than substituting a general schedule. Gastrointestinal diets are selected according to the dog’s condition: UC Davis notes that options may include highly digestible, reduced-fat, novel-antigen, or fiber-enhanced foods. Do not add a therapeutic diet or fiber supplement without veterinary guidance.
Monitor your Cane Corso during the change
Keep track of stool quality, appetite, and behavior throughout the transition. Make other food variables easier to interpret by avoiding extra treats or rich foods if diarrhea develops. As Meredith Miller, associate clinical professor of small animal medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, advises: “Owners should avoid excessive treats or rich food until the diarrhea resolves,”

If diarrhea begins after a switch, Cornell recommends returning to the original food until stools firm, then trying the transition again more slowly—over one to two weeks. This is guidance for diarrhea following a food change, not proof that the change caused the symptom.

A food transition is only one possible cause of diarrhea. Cornell lists other possibilities including dietary indiscretion, parasites, infection, foreign bodies, allergies, and other disease. Do not keep treating persistent or recurring symptoms as a food-transition problem.

- Contact your veterinarian if diarrhea lasts more than a day or two, the stool is black or tarry or contains fresh blood, vomiting occurs too, or appetite remains absent.
- If a bland diet has not helped after two to three days, Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian.
- For chronic diarrhea or repeated stomach upset, arrange a veterinary appointment to investigate underlying causes.
- Do not give human medicines such as bismuth subsalicylate or loperamide unless your veterinarian directs you to do so.
If your dog has a diagnosed gastrointestinal condition or is already on a prescribed therapeutic food, ask the veterinary team how to change diets; the appropriate food and pace depend on the individual patient.
