How to Take a Long Road Trip or Flight With Your Cat Safely

For a long trip with a cat, start carrier training well in advance, keep the cat secured in a carrier while traveling, and plan for food, water, litter, identification, and cleanup. Talk with your veterinarian about your cat’s health and travel needs. If you’re flying, confirm current rules and availability with the airline before booking; destination requirements can also vary.

Before you choose how to travel

There is no single best way to travel long-distance with every cat. Consider your cat’s health and stress response, the route and number of transfers or stops, access to food, water, and litter, and the rules of the airline or destination. For an older cat, a cat with a chronic condition, or a short-nosed cat, ask your veterinarian early whether the planned trip is suitable and what precautions it requires.

Make reservations at cat-friendly overnight accommodations before a multi-day drive. For international travel or travel to Hawaii, check requirements early with your veterinarian and the relevant USDA and destination authorities; added restrictions or quarantine may apply. Requirements depend on the route and can change.

Prepare your cat and carrier before departure

1. Start with a veterinary conversation

Discuss the itinerary, health conditions, feeding and hydration, motion sickness, anxiety, current medications, and any required records with your veterinarian. This is especially important if you are considering medication or your cat has a medical condition.

2. Make the carrier part of the home

Leave the carrier open in a familiar room well before travel. Let your cat investigate it voluntarily rather than bringing it out only when a stressful trip is imminent. A secure carrier appropriate to the travel mode is essential; for air travel, verify the airline’s current dimensions and rules before buying one.

3. Build a positive association

Encourage exploration with a favorite blanket, toy, treats, or meals near or inside the carrier. Let your cat have a place to hide, and keep the experience calm. FelineVMA’s 2025 position statement emphasizes appropriate carriers, acclimation, minimizing distress, and a hiding opportunity.

4. Practice handling and short trips gradually

Once your cat is comfortable entering the carrier, practice closing it briefly, carrying it, and taking short rides. Increase the duration gradually, watching for signs of distress. Do not assume that one practice session will prepare every cat for a long journey.

5. Consider partial carrier coverage

A light cover may help some cats feel less exposed. Preserve ventilation and make sure the carrier remains secure and easy to monitor. A familiar blanket inside can also provide a recognizable scent and resting surface.

How to keep a cat safe in the car

6. Secure the cat in a carrier for the drive

Keep your cat in a properly secured carrier throughout vehicle travel; do not let the cat roam loose in the car. A harness and leash are for supervised handling outside the carrier, not a substitute for confinement in a moving vehicle. AVMA and FelineVMA guidance supports safe restraint and appropriate carriers.

7. Plan food and water for your particular trip

Bring familiar food, water, and dishes, with extra supplies in case of delays. AVMA’s general travel guidance suggests small portions of food and water on long trips and planning stops, but your cat’s feeding and hydration plan should account for its health and itinerary. Ask your veterinarian rather than applying a universal schedule.

11. Confirm overnight stays accept cats

Check directly with each hotel or other accommodation before arrival. If staying with relatives or friends, agree in advance on a quiet, secure room where the cat can settle with familiar supplies.

12. Never leave your cat alone in a parked car

Do not leave a cat unattended in a parked vehicle, even briefly. The cabin can become dangerously hot quickly, according to VCA; a parked car is not a safe place to wait while you run an errand.

13. Check the airline before booking

Contact the airline directly before buying a ticket or carrier. Confirm whether a pet space is available, whether the cat can travel in the cabin or must travel under other conditions, the carrier’s permitted dimensions, and required paperwork. Airline requirements and availability vary, so do not rely on rules from a different carrier or an older trip.

14. Arrange veterinary guidance and documents

Ask your veterinarian about a visit near the travel date, health risks, and which vaccination or travel records you need. Check destination rules early, particularly for international travel or Hawaii, with the appropriate authorities as well as your veterinarian. Do not assume that airline requirements alone cover entry requirements.

15. Plan for airport screening and handling

VCA advises that the carrier passes through X-ray screening, while the cat does not. Be ready to handle your cat outside the carrier and return it securely afterward. A well-fitted, escape-resistant harness and leash can help with supervised handling if your cat is accustomed to them; follow airport staff instructions and keep control of the cat throughout.

VCA also describes the FAA requirement that pets traveling in the cabin remain in their carriers during the flight. Check the current airline instructions for the specific trip.

Managing anxiety, nausea, and medication

Gradual carrier acclimation is a practical first step for reducing travel stress. VCA also mentions feline pheromone products and, in some cases, veterinarian-prescribed medication as possible approaches; they are not guaranteed to work for every cat. Motion sickness and anxiety can have different causes, so describe your cat’s symptoms and travel plan to your veterinarian.

Do not give a travel drug or use a dose based on another animal’s prescription. AVMA cautions against tranquilizers for air travel because they can raise heart or respiratory risks. If medication is being considered, leave the decision and risk assessment to your veterinarian.

What to pack for a long-distance trip

  • A secure carrier suited to the travel mode, with airline dimensions checked before flying.
  • Familiar bedding or a toy, plus an optional light cover that does not block ventilation.
  • Absorbent carrier pads, spare liners, bags, and cleanup supplies.
  • Familiar food, water, dishes, and extra provisions for delays.
  • Familiar litter and a portable tray for long or overnight trips.
  • Current identification and microchip contact details, if applicable.
  • Medical records, vaccination or travel documents, and current medication information.
  • A fitted harness and leash for supervised handling outside the carrier, if your cat is practiced with them.

This guidance draws on the American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2023 “Travel with your pet” brochure; VCA’s veterinarian-authored guidance on road trips and car travel with your cat, flying with your cat, and motion sickness in cats; and FelineVMA’s 2025 Transportation of Cats in Motor Vehicles Position Statement.
