How to Teach Your Dog a Nose Touch

Teach your dog to touch an open hand with their nose, add the “touch” cue when the behavior is reliable, and progress to new positions, distractions, or object targets.

To teach a nose touch, present an open, flat hand near your dog’s nose, mark the instant their nose touches your palm, and reward them. Once your dog is readily touching your hand, add the cue “touch,” then gradually practice with the hand farther away, in different positions, and around mild distractions.

What a nose touch teaches

A nose touch—also called nose targeting or hand targeting—is your dog making nose contact with a target, usually your open hand. It gives you a simple way to invite your dog toward a position or redirect their attention. Once the hand target is familiar, you can also teach contact with an object.

You can start with just your hand and a suitable reward. A clicker is optional; a consistent spoken marker such as “Yes” can mark the moment of contact instead.

Teach the hand target step by step

  1. Choose a calm setting. Hold a flat, open hand close to your dog’s nose and pause to let them investigate. Avoid repeatedly pushing your hand toward their face.
  2. Mark and reward contact. The instant your dog’s nose touches your palm, click or say a short marker word such as “Yes,” then praise and give a treat. Deliver the reward near your palm so the rewarded position is clear.
  3. Make it easier if needed. If your dog is hesitant, reward looking toward, approaching, or sniffing the hand. Gradually wait for closer investigation and then nose contact. A treat can encourage investigation at first, but remove the food lure once your dog understands that the hand itself is the target.
  4. Repeat until the touch is intentional. Practice until your dog readily bumps your hand rather than merely exploring it by chance.
  5. Add the cue. When contact is reliable, say “touch” immediately before presenting your hand. Mark and reward the contact. Saying the cue first helps it predict the action rather than naming a behavior your dog has already completed.

Build distance, positions, and distractions gradually

When your dog responds readily to the cue in an easy setting, make one change at a time. Move your hand a little farther away, vary its height or position, and later practice with modest distractions. Keep the difficulty low enough that your dog can succeed; if they stop engaging, make the next repetition easier.

Transfer the touch to an object

To teach a nose touch to a new target, first hold the object over your palm so it occupies the familiar hand-target position. Reward your dog for touching the object, then gradually move it off your hand toward the place where you want the dog to touch it. Ordinary items such as a yogurt lid, sticky note, or clear plastic can serve as targets; a specialized device is not required.

Choose a marker your dog can understand

A clicker and a spoken marker can both identify the instant to reward. Choose the option you can use consistently and that your dog is comfortable hearing. The cited guidance does not establish that one marker produces better training outcomes than the other, so there is no evidence-based reason to treat a clicker as essential.

What nose targeting can—and cannot—do

A nose target can help guide movement, teach positions, redirect attention, or build contact with an object such as a bell. These are training applications, not guaranteed treatments for anxiety or reactivity. If you need help adapting the exercise to your dog, a reward-based class or qualified trainer can provide individualized guidance.
