Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTeach “watch me” by first rewarding your dog for looking toward your face in a quiet room. Use a treat to guide the look, mark and reward it, then repeat with an empty hand so the dog learns to respond to your signal rather than follow food. Add the spoken cue once the hand signal is reliable, and build up distractions gradually.
Teach the look before adding “watch me”
- Start somewhere quiet. Choose a room where your dog can focus without competing distractions. Hold a treat near the dog’s nose and move it slowly up toward the space between your eyes.
- Mark and reward the glance. When your dog looks toward your face, mark the moment with a clicker, a word such as “yes,” or praise, then give the reward. Repeat until your dog is following the movement reliably.
- Switch to an empty-hand signal. Make the same hand movement without a treat in that hand. When your dog looks toward your face, mark the look and give a reward from your other hand. This separates the signal from the food.
- Add the verbal cue. Once your dog reliably follows the hand signal, say “watch me” just before making the gesture. With practice, your dog can learn that the words predict the cue to look toward you.
Keep early repetitions easy and rewarding. A cue learned in one quiet room may not work automatically in a new place, so practice in different settings only as your dog is ready.

Build attention around distractions
Introduce one manageable distraction at a time. For example, place a treat to the side. When your dog looks back toward you, mark the choice and reward it. As the exercise gets easier, wait for direct eye contact before marking.

Gradually increase the challenge rather than jumping straight to a busy environment. If your dog cannot respond, move farther from the distraction or return to an easier version. The environment may be too overwhelming for learning at that moment; making the exercise easier gives your dog a better chance to succeed.

A watch-me cue can help redirect attention, but it does not by itself make an encounter with a trigger safe. Keep enough distance and manage the situation so your dog can stay comfortable and respond.
Choose a reward your dog values
Treats are a straightforward way to guide and reward the look. If your dog is not motivated by food, try a toy and reward the response with a short game of tug or fetch. A clicker is optional: a consistent marker word or praise can also mark the moment your dog looks toward you.

Keep eye contact comfortable and voluntary
Some dogs find direct eye contact uncomfortable, and staring can feel threatening. Keep practice brief and relaxed, and reward voluntary looks rather than trying to hold your dog’s gaze. If your dog looks away deliberately or seems uncomfortable, pause, give them a break, and try again when you can both stay calm. Never force a stare.
Use a visual cue for a deaf dog
A deaf dog can learn an attention cue that does not depend on hearing the words “watch me.” Pair a visible signal, such as pointing toward your eyes, with a reward whenever your dog makes eye contact. Once your dog has learned the association, give the signal while the dog is looking away and reward the turn back toward you.
