How to Teach Your Dog to Sleep in Their Own Bed

Use short, positive practice to teach your dog to go to their bed, lie down, and settle there. Build duration gradually and adjust the setup if your dog seems distressed or uncomfortable.

Teach your dog that their bed is a rewarding place to settle, then gradually build the time they stay there. Start with short, easy daytime practice using treats and a release cue; once your dog is comfortable, make the bed their predictable nighttime spot. A dog bed or mat can help, but the goal is calm, voluntary settling—not forcing a dog to remain in a place that causes distress.

Teach “bed” or “place” in short steps

Choose one bed or mat and keep it in a calm, consistent location. Have small treats ready. You do not need a special bed: a mat can work just as well. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes the following bed-training approach, attributed to AKC GoodDog! Helpline Trainer Breanne Long (AKC bed-training instructions).

  1. Lure your dog onto the bed. Guide them onto it with a treat, then lure them into a down. Drop a treat between their paws while they are lying on the bed.
  2. Reward a brief stay. Give your dog a moment to settle, reward them for remaining there, then say a release word such as “okay” or “free.” Repeat a few times.
  3. Wait for your dog to offer the behavior. Stand near the bed and pause. When your dog gets on and lies down without being lured, reward them. If they do not approach, briefly return to the easier lure.
  4. Add a cue. As your dog starts to get on the bed and lie down, say “bed” or “place.” Reward them when they complete the behavior. Use the same cue consistently.
  5. Build duration and distance separately. Once your dog can stay for 10 seconds, try a modest increase in time. At another point, practice taking a small step away. Avoid increasing time and distance at once, and release your dog to signal the end of each stay.
  6. Make it easier after repeated misses. If your dog gets up or does not respond several times, return to a level where they can succeed. Give breaks; do not expect a high-energy dog to stay in place for a long stretch right away.

Help your dog settle there overnight

Use the same bed and cue at bedtime, and reward calm settling on the bed. Before practice, consider ordinary needs such as toileting and activity so your dog is more likely to be ready to rest. If your dog gets off the bed, calmly guide them back only if they are comfortable doing so, and make the next attempt shorter or easier. The AKC’s bed-training guidance teaches a “go to bed” behavior; it does not establish a fixed overnight training timeline or guarantee that every dog will sleep there through the night.

Build a positive association with the sleeping spot during the day, too. The AKC recommends pairing a designated safe place with treats, favorite toys, and pleasant experiences, while adding time and distractions gradually. Keep practice calm and do not punish a dog for being afraid or unsettled. A portable dog mat can be useful if you want the same familiar cue surface in different places; an existing mat, bed, treat, or favorite toy may be enough (AKC guidance on helping an anxious dog).

Choose a sleeping space your dog can handle

An open bed or mat is different from a crate. A bed or mat gives your dog a clear place to settle; a crate is a separate management tool, not a required part of bed training. Choose the setup according to whether your dog can enter and leave voluntarily, stays calm there, and can use the surface comfortably. For a dog with mobility concerns, consider whether the bed is easy to access; for a puppy who needs a larger puppy-proofed space, a gated area may be more appropriate than prolonged confinement. The AKC notes that a bed or mat can serve as a safe place and that a mat can travel with the dog.

Do not use a crate to make a panicking dog endure distress. The AKC warns that some anxious dogs may try to escape a crate and injure themselves; a larger puppy-proofed safe area and help from a qualified trainer or animal behavior professional may be safer. As Rachel Lane, M.Sc., CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, puts it in the AKC’s crate-training guidance: “The most important tip for crate training is to move slowly and at your dog’s own pace.” (AKC crate-training guidance)

Troubleshoot setbacks without turning bedtime into a battle

  • Your dog keeps leaving the bed: You may have increased duration or distance too quickly. Return to the last successful level and reward calm staying before making a smaller increase.
  • Your dog will not approach: Go back to the simple lure, or reward attention toward the bed. Make the spot comfortable and rewarding before asking for a longer stay.
  • Your dog whines, barks, or seems distressed: Do not assume defiance. Vocalizing can have different causes, including stress, boredom, hunger, or needing to go outside. Check for a need and reduce the challenge rather than insisting on a long stay.
  • Your dog panics when confined: Stop using a crate as the solution and consider a larger puppy-proofed safe area. Seek advice from a qualified trainer or animal behavior professional if anxiety persists or the situation is complex.
  • Your older dog seems uncomfortable: Senior dogs may have aches or arthritis. The AKC notes they may be more comfortable with a larger area and multiple resting places than with prolonged confinement.
  • Your puppy is sleeping on your human bed: AKC puppy guidance advises that a young puppy sleep in a crate until housebroken and mature enough to get on and off the human bed without injury risk. This is specific to young puppies and human-bed safety, not a rule that every adult dog must sleep separately.
  • Bed sharing is connected to aggression or another behavior problem: Give your dog a separate sleeping space and consult a professional trainer, behavior consultant, or veterinarian. The AKC says that bed sharing is unlikely to cause problems for a well-adjusted, well-behaved dog, but recommends professional help when it worsens an existing behavior concern (AKC advice on dogs sleeping with their owners).
