How to Tell If Your Cat Loves You: Signs Beyond Slow Blinking

A relaxed greeting, rubbing, and choosing to stay near you can suggest trust and connection. Learn why no single cat behavior—including slow blinking—proves love.

You can’t ask a cat to define love, but you can notice whether they choose your company and seem comfortable around you. A relaxed upright tail, a friendly approach, rubbing against you, and voluntarily staying nearby can all be signs of a trusting, affiliative relationship. Read them as a pattern—not as a single, certain test—and let your cat decide whether contact continues.

What signs suggest your cat feels safe and connected to you?

Look at your cat’s whole body and the situation. Friendly behavior is more meaningful when your cat approaches voluntarily, looks relaxed, and stays engaged. A familiar greeting that includes an upright, easy tail, walking toward you, or rubbing against you is more informative than any one gesture on its own.

  • They greet you with a relaxed upright tail. This can be a friendly greeting, especially when the cat approaches rather than being carried or cornered.
  • They come over and rub their face or body against you. This commonly serves as a greeting and scent communication, making you part of a familiar social environment.
  • They choose to sit or rest near you. Voluntary proximity can be a useful everyday cue when it fits a broader pattern of relaxed interaction. On its own, it is not a validated measure of attachment.
  • They remain comfortable during gentle contact. A cat who approaches, accepts familiar strokes, and can leave freely is showing comfort in that interaction.

Each cat is an individual. Some are openly sociable; others show comfort by sharing space without seeking much touch. Compare your cat’s behavior with their usual manner, not with another cat’s.

What does it mean when your cat rubs against you?

Rubbing is often a friendly greeting, and it also transfers scent from glands around the cat’s face and body. It can help make a person or place smell familiar. It is reasonable to read it as social contact, but not as a precise translation of “I love you.” Cats Protection’s explanation of cat rubbing also advises seeking veterinary advice if rubbing becomes unusually frequent or aggressive, or changes significantly.

Why does my cat show me their belly?

A cat lying on their side or back may be relaxed enough to expose a vulnerable area. That can be a sign of comfort in the moment, but it is not an invitation to rub or tickle their belly. Acknowledge the greeting and let the cat choose whether to come closer. Many cats dislike belly handling, even when they feel safe with a person.

Does slow blinking mean my cat loves me?

Slow blinking can occur in a relaxed, non-threatening encounter, but it is not a required sign of affection or a definitive “cat kiss.” Cats Protection notes that evidence for treating it as a smile or specific affection signal is limited. Interpret it alongside posture and context: a relaxed cat is different from one who appears tense, fearful, or uncomfortable. Some cats simply do not slow blink.

If your cat is relaxed, you can try a slow blink from a comfortable distance and then let them choose what to do. Don’t move closer or insist on contact if they seem stressed. Cats Protection’s slow-blinking guidance also recommends speaking to a vet about eye changes such as excessive blinking or squinting.

Do purring and kneading prove a cat is happy?

Purring

Purring can accompany contentment, but it also occurs in other circumstances, including pain. Read it with the cat’s posture and what is happening around them rather than treating the sound as proof that all is well. See Cats Protection’s guide to why cats purr.

Kneading

Kneading begins as a kitten nursing behavior. Some cats continue it as adults, often on soft surfaces, but the reason adult cats knead is not known for certain. It may happen during a comfortable moment, but it does not prove a particular feeling. Cats Protection’s explanation of kneading distinguishes the known kitten behavior from the uncertainty about why adults continue it.

How should you respond to your cat’s signals?

  1. Give your cat the choice to approach. Avoid trapping, pursuing, or picking them up to get a response.
  2. Offer a hand to sniff. If your cat approaches and stays relaxed, try gentle strokes around familiar areas such as the head.
  3. Let the interaction end when your cat wants. Stop if they turn away, stiffen, flatten their ears, or show other signs of fear or aggression. Give them space rather than trying to win them back with more petting.

Flattened ears and other postures can indicate fear; Cornell’s veterinary behavior guidance advises stopping petting when aggression appears. See Cornell University’s guidance on feline aggression. An exposed belly does not override your cat’s other signals.

When might a behavior change need veterinary advice?

Ordinary rubbing and greeting behavior are different from a marked change. If rubbing becomes unusually frequent or aggressive, Cats Protection recommends contacting a vet because changes can sometimes have a medical cause, including irritation or neurological issues. Excessive blinking or squinting also warrants veterinary advice. Treat a new health-related change as a separate concern, not automatically as affection.

How common are misunderstandings about cat signals?

In a 2013 Cats Protection survey of more than 1,100 adult cat owners, 65% of respondents believed cats only purr when happy, 76% did not recognize an upright tail as a greeting, and 69% understood that cats slow-blink when relaxed in people’s company. These are historical UK survey results, not current estimates of cat owners’ beliefs.
